Never Gonna Snow Again Movie Review

Never Gonna Snow Again is a 2020 Polish drama film directed by Malgorzata Szumowska and Michal Englert and starring Alec Utgoff. It’s a very annoying movie.

While working as a masseur in a gated community in Poland, Zhenia, a Russian-speaking immigrant from the East unexpectedly builds a cult following. This premise admittedly sounded interesting to me upon first reading it, but the movie itself is not interesting whatsoever. It’s actually very dull, slow and too difficult to get into.

I had expected some interesting themes about immigration and class differences, but the film rarely addressed those. Yes, many can find the privilege and class themes throughout the movie, but for me those are too subtle and almost non-existent. Most of the movie is weird for the sake of being weird.

And I liked that atmosphere in the movie, I have to admit. Its strange, peculiar mood and very cold and dark cinematography made for an atmospheric treat and one where you felt that anything can really happen, but most of the things that happened were too silly and/or interesting. Again, it’s the case of style over substance.

I also strongly disliked the main character. I found him quite annoying and unlikable while the other people are also very poorly realized. Never Gonna Snow Again simply has too many characters to properly make an impact with any one of them. The direction and pacing are mediocre too, though again the cinematography is very strong and the interiors were intriguing.

Never Gonna Snow Again has a very strong mood and atmosphere, I will give it that. But other than that strong aspect, everything else mostly sucked. The characters are underdeveloped, the plot is non-existent and the pacing is slow. It’s a movie that fails to garner viewers’ attention and to introduce any of the themes that could have otherwise been explored with a different approach.

My Rating – 2.5
