Luck Movie Review

Luck is a 2022 animated fantasy comedy film directed by Peggy Holmes. It is the first feature produced by Skydance Animation and it’s not a promising one.

It tells the story of Sam Greenfield, the unluckiest person in the world. Suddenly finding herself in the never-before-seen Land of Luck, she must unite with the magical creatures there to turn her luck around. This is the first movie produced by John Lasseter after he got fired by Pixar. It is definitely one of his weakest efforts and this studio, though promising in some respects, still has to prove itself in the animation arena.

What I liked here was the world building, though only to a degree. The movie is overly complicated for kids, which are the intended demographic for it, thus it’s a failure in terms of marketing. This world needed to have been better fleshed out, but I still liked inhabiting it, especially the various creatures that we got to meet.

I also liked the characters, though they were underdeveloped. Sam is highly likable and easy to root for, but she needed more of a personality besides the being unlucky destiny. Bob was played by Simon Pegg and the result is this very amusing and adorable cat with a hilarious Scottish accent. Every scene starring him was a winner. Others were all fleeting presences, though the dragon character was fine overall.

Luck looks strong, though I would hardly call it artistic. It’s the type of polished CGI animation that’s pleasing to the eye, but familiar and safe. The character designs were particularly uninventive as I’ve seen them so many times before in so many different animated movies. The score is also uninspired and I really disliked that one pop song that they included as it was overly modern and annoying.

Luck also failed to properly make use of its world and storyline. The third act was too typical in its inspirational messaging and convenient in its resolution. Again, it’s sweet and fine for kids, but for adults it left a lot to be desired. It’s a cute movie, though. It is not annoying like so many similar films are as its positivity and lighthearted nature are to be appreciated, but I needed more sophistication nonetheless.

Luck has an adorable cat sidekick, solid animation and it’s pleasant and endearing enough, but it needed a better realized world, a stronger and more original plot and a less messy third act that felt too inspirational and convenient. It’s a cute kid flick, but nothing more than that.

My Rating – 3
