It follows a bunch of people on a plane which has a problem and has to circle around before landing. We meet various stewards who are all gay, and we follow the soapy storylines with the passengers themselves. That’s the basic premise here and it’s serviceable in the context of the film’s genre.

The stories about the passengers were simply way too over-the-top and too much like a soap opera for my liking. Those were my least favorite, though still not bad at all and fun at times. But the gay stewards are the reason to see this film as they are all hilarious.

The problem with this film is that it has a very limited appeal to it as most straight audiences simply couldn’t get it so that’s why it struggled with the critics. I personally loved these jokes and these stereotypical portrayals of gay men which contrasted so well with the boring PC representations we see in all of American media today.

Joserra is hilarious with his drinking problem and I loved his relationship with the pilot, and the conclusion of their story was a lot of fun and perfect. Ulloa and Fajas are also quite amusing in their stereotypes whereas Benito struggling with his homosexuality was hilarious throughout. I liked the domino lady and the crazy “psychic” woman, but other passengers were forgettable when all is said and done.

I’m So Excited is at its best when we follow the hilarious dialogue exchanges with the pilots and the stewards. Their obsession with everything sex-related was consistently amusing to hear. Whenever movie dealt with those other characters, it wasn’t as exciting.

It’s still a pretty good movie, but I wanted more of the stewards personally. The dialogue is perfect though, and the gay jokes all worked for me, and I appreciated their graphic nature. The humor is so good. The script is passable, and the story is too silly and pointless in the end, but as a fun comedy, it more than succeeds, and it’s one of Almodovar’s most underrated flicks.

I’m So Excited has a limited appeal and it’s definitely very soapy in the passengers’ subplots, but the stewards and pilots stole the show here with their hilarious banter. The movie’s humor is superb as the film made me laugh quite a lot while the stereotypical portrayal of its characters was both amusing and refreshing in this politically correct era. It’s a very underrated flick.

My Rating – 4
