Here Today, Gone Tamale Review

Here Today, Gone Tamale is a 1959 animated short film from the Looney Tunes series. It is a very entertaining short.

Sylvester the Cat won’t allow starving Mexican mice access to a cache of cheeses on a ship and prompts a challenge by Speedy Gonzales, the fastest mouse in Mexico. Speedy makes several raids on the ship’s stores by outsmarting Sylvester again and again. Finally, Sylvester gives up and joins their celebration in what is the funniest scene in the movie followed by a hilarious line of dialogue by Speedy – “The cat has gone loco in the cabeza”.

The rest of the cartoon is also a lot of fun. I do not find the pairing of Sylvester with Speedy to usually work all that well, but here it was quite good. The animation is strong and the dialogue was particularly humorous. The overall storyline, though, could have been better as the cartoon quickly ends without much substance included.

Here Today, Gone Tamale is only okay in its plot, but Sylvester and Speedy are both excellent here and the ending is hilarious.

My Rating – 4
