Harley Quinn Season 4 Review

The fourth season of Harley Quinn was released in 2023. It consists of ten episodes and it was pretty much on par with the previous season.

This show was once great, but after the first two seasons it started too dip in quality and momentum. This continues with this fourth season that was solid, but far from great. It left me wanting for more as both the humor and the storytelling left a lot to be desired.

Harley Quinn Season 4 Review

My main issue with the previous season was that once Poison Ivy and Harley Quinn got together, they lost their spark and have become dull. My gripe with this season is that they were separated for the majority of its runtime. It’s never a good idea when shows do this, so I don’t know why they continue to make the same mistake.

Their different paths were well explored individually, but I missed their fun dynamic when they are together. With that being said, Ivy was as funny as ever and her arc was overall quite solid. Harley being with the Bat family was well explored and how she came to realize that she is neither a hero nor a villain was a terrific idea that was so well executed. Kaley Cuoco and Lake Bell continue to shine in these roles.

Others saw a diminishing return. Joker was only okay and far from greatly utilized, King Shark and Doctor Psycho were thoroughly underutilized this season and Nightwing was boring and only used in the context of one gag. The show would constantly repeat that he has a great ass as a gag, which felt tired very quickly. Most of the humor, in fact, felt repetitious and overplayed in this season that was never as amusing as the first two were.

The animation was pretty good, the score and sound were also excellent and the show’s dialogue and characterization continue to be its best assets. This time around, they even got to depict and explore some lesser known DC characters, which will prove to be a delight for comic book fans. I just wished for more meaningful arcs and better humor overall.

The fourth season of Harley Quinn has mostly forgettable storylines and not particularly great humor. It’s a wildly uneven season that separated its heroines way too often. It still looks and sounds great, it’s so well acted and the characterization continued to shine, but it needed more oomph in the storytelling and humor department.

Worst Episodes: Metamorphosis and Il Buffone.

Best Episodes:  Icons Only and Killers Block.

My Rating – 3.8
