It follows a woman who must relieve her day of death over and over again until she figures out who her murderer is. This is obviously another ‘Groundhog Day’ inspired movie and it’s pretty unoriginal when all is said and done as they basically took that concept and transported it to a horror environment and that’s about it.

But the movie is so much fun and so good that it mostly managed to transcend that inherent flaw from the start. I just appreciated how purely entertaining it is in almost every scene and you cannot go wrong with this one if you want to be entertained for a night viewing experience.

Jessica Rothe as Tree is revelatory. I don’t know how somebody hasn’t already grabbed her for a bigger movie, but in this franchise she obviously proved out to be remarkable as she’s so competent throughout. The protagonist herself is highly likable and I really appreciated her journey here toward becoming a better person.

I also really liked Carter as he’s so sweet and the romance between the two is so strong and genuinely wonderful and I rooted for them from the beginning. I loved everything when it comes to the movie’s romantic comedy angle as it worked stupendously and it succeeds in that regard even more so than as a horror.

That’s because I simply did not find the movie particularly creepy and all of the horror sequences were pretty basic and expected. The twist in the end that Lori is the true killer was somewhat expected, but still a bit too silly and extreme for such a small thing which is basically jealousy on her part.

I did like that killer and he was effective in some of his scenes, but overall none of the film was as atmospheric or as genuinely creepy as I wanted it to have been. That’s why it succeeds so much more in the comedy and romance department.

Happy Death Day features terrific pacing as the flick is highly entertaining from start to finish. It progressively becomes more fun and interesting with every next scene being more intriguing than the one before and the filmmakers made it interesting by including that problematic, but essential twist and that angle that she had to save Carter because he saved her. That was wonderful and I just loved the protagonist’s arc so much here. The dialogue and humor are both good too. It truly is a stupendous flick that did not have any right to be as fun as it was.

Happy Death Day is entirely unoriginal in its concept for sure. It also features a somewhat silly twist and it’s not as effective in the horror department as it should have been. However, the movie is so damn entertaining and that mostly rendered those flaws irrelevant. Jessica Rothe is so good in the main role and she plays a great protagonist with a terrific arc. I also really liked the flick’s charming rom com angle.

My Rating – 3.5
