Dumb Patrol Review

Dumb Patrol is a 1964 animated short film from the Looney Tunes series. It is a very funny cartoon.

It follows biplane battles over France in World War I between Bugs and the Baron, who is basically Yosemite Sam. This is a very interesting Bugs/Sam cartoon as it’s a period piece set in WWI, which we don’t see quite as often. This led to the two characters having different roles than usual, which I appreciated. Bugs is also the attacker here instead of the other way around, which was also refreshing.

While the action that happens in the second half is not among the best in this duo’s history, it’s still pretty good. The planes were well designed and quite goofy while each plan of Sam backfiring produced very amusing results. The animation is terrific and the dialogue is also great. Bugs is very conniving here, but it is Yosemite Sam who steals the show with his very funny German accent. The beginning is fun, but rough as Porky Pig gets sidelined way too quickly. That was unfortunate as this could have been a rare cartoon starring all three of these iconic characters.

Dumb Patrol has a weaker beginning, but the biplane action is a lot of fun. Yosemite Sam is terrific and very memorable here.

My Rating – 4
