Disenchantment Season 5 Review

The fifth season of Disenchantment ended the entire show strongly. It’s a very good final season and the best one in the series’ history.

And my second to last wish is to keep Weirdo away from my corpse.

Do you hear that, Weirdo? I know what you’re thinking!

It is really disappointing seeing this series ending right when it became great. Yes, a show that was at first only solid but ended up being pretty strong in its own right, Disenchantment is a great showcase that comedies sometimes take a lot of time before they become great with each new season being better and better. The fifth season was the best of the bunch and for a variety of reasons.

One is the storytelling. This is where the show reached its peak in terms of ambition and scope. Magic was fully utilized, which appealed to me as a fantasy fan, but even more so the stories had a lot of heart and the characters have by now become fully fleshed out.

The core of this season was the conflict between Bean and her mother Queen Dagmar. Dagmar was here truly electric – a competent, powerful villain who chewed scenery like crazy and who was delightfully over-the-top in her villainy. Bean herself was quite sympathetic and her relationship with her mermaid girlfriend was charming. The highlight of the season was the epic confrontation between mother and daughter in the last two episodes that was truly exhilarating.

King Zog is one of the best characters in Disenchantment, so it was quite a bit of a letdown that he was so seriously sidelined this time around. But others were great. Odval and his elf boyfriend were quite funny. Luci was once again quite amusing while Elfo continued to be the best and funniest character on this show as his lines of dialogue were consistently ridiculous and hilarious.

Disenchantment was once mostly too dramatic while here thankfully the humor was amped up significantly, resulting in the funniest season to date. The best jokes were the blue humor ones, the kind that you would never see in ‘The Simpsons’ with Matt Groening stepping it up here in terms of mature humor. The first half of the season was a bit slower and less interesting, but the second one was funnier and more epic, ending the show on a strong note.

At the end of the day, the fifth season of Disenchantment was a blast to watch. It started off weakly and it sidelined some characters in favor of others, but thankfully the humor was more emphasized here while the scope was more ambitious. The fantastical elements also worked and the characterization was superb. It was a great way to end the show and it’s a shame that we only got five seasons of this series that has just become great.

Worst Episodes: Fish Out of Water and I Hear Your Noggin, But You Can’t Come In.

Best Episodes: Gimme Gimme Shock Treatment and Darkness Falls.

My Rating – 4.1
