Die Another Day Movie Review

Die Another Day is a 2002 spy film directed by Lee Tamahori and starring Pierce Brosnan and Halle Berry. It is a pretty fun, though admittedly ridiculous entry.

Yes, everything I said about ‘The World Is Not Enough’ also basically applies here. I would say they are of similar quality with this one being slightly better, but they both share their strengths and problems. One such strength is the action which is well executed and the film is frequently very entertaining and just a lot of goofy fun.

The same goes for the actors. The villains aren’t great and Rosamund Pike’s Miranda Frost is so forgettable, but Pierce Brosnan is reliably amusing and funny in his final performance as Bond. I really did like him quite a bit, although he did not get the best material.

And Halle Berry also steals the show with a very solid performance and a magnetic, charismatic turn as this sexy but also competent Bond girl who is most certainly one of the better Bond girls out there. She is almost as important here as Bond and the interactions between the two are certainly the film’s highlights.

Die Another Day has some solid humorous moments and good locations, but bad villains who are too cartoony per usual for the franchise. And once again we have a ridiculous story which is over-the-top even for animation and comic-book films.

Nothing here is believable and some of the action is borderline ludicrous. The use of special effects is also overwhelming as pinpointed by the critics and although I definitely liked that ice setup, most of the scenes on ice are so funny, but in a bad way.

So overall, Pierce Brosnan’s era has been just as silly as Roger Moore’s era. Although I would say that he is a better Bond, Moore ultimately got a bit better movies in my opinion. By now the Bond franchise has become stale and overly silly which led to Daniel Craig’s darker era afterwards.

Die Another Day is, just as its predecessor, very entertaining in its action scenes, but ridiculous in its cartoony and unbelievable story. The silliness once again abounds here and pretty much sinks the entire affair, but Brosnan is very good as is Halle Berry who gave us one of the better and more memorable Bond girls.

My Rating – 3
