Bride of Chucky Movie Review

Bride of Chucky is a 1998 slasher comedy film directed by Ronny Yu and starring Brad Dourif and Jennifer Tilly. It is the funniest and campiest entry in this franchise.

Chucky and Tiffany, two possessed dolls, head to New Jersey to look for the former’s amulet that can help them regain their human form. This entry took the series in a decidedly comedic territory, which to me works because this series’ concept has always been a ridiculous one, so it makes sense to make fun of it. The self-parodic, winking nature of this script was a great idea.

As a result of that approach, the movie received very bad reviews, but critics have proven time and time again that they don’t like or appreciate fun movies or humor in most cases, so it’s only natural that they would trash this film. But I definitely appreciate it for what it is, which is a romp that’s not supposed to be taken seriously and it should be watched as pure entertainment.

Taking a character such as Chucky and making a movie entirely revolve around him can be dangerous, but here it worked as I was growing impatient with Andy’s story, so it was wonderful just seeing an emphasis on the doll for a change. Brad Dourif is fantastic as always and Chucky has some very funny lines here.

But the standout is his girlfriend played by Jennifer Tilly. In a brilliant, hilarious turn, Chucky gets a murderous doll as a girlfriend and the two wreck mayhem everywhere, resulting in some hilarious sequences of destruction and death in the most over-the-top manners possible. The dynamic between the two is just so much fun.

Bride of Chucky’s ending is absolutely ludicrous, too stupid even for this movie. The third act was definitely messy and the supporting human characters were mediocre, but some of their deaths were memorable and the movie was surprisingly energetic and extremely entertaining from start to finish, so it’s difficult not to like it. It is one of the better entries in the franchise.

Bride of Chucky is a ridiculous movie, but I love it for that. The Child’s Play franchise has always had a silly premise, so taking it in a decidedly comedic, campy territory worked in this instance. The result is a stupid, but highly entertaining movie that is particularly memorable for Jennifer Tilly’s Tiffany character and many sequences of ludicrous, glorious mayhem.
