Best Films from February 2022:

3. Jacob’s Ladder

Jacob’s Ladder is the third best movie I saw during this month. It was such an influential early 90s horror flick that remains chilling and intriguing to this day. It is slow for sure, but also an artistic blend of thriller, horror, fantasy and even war drama elements. The twist ending should be talked about more nowadays as it was both revolutionary and quite heartbreaking.

2. The Truffle Hunters

The Truffle Hunters is this self-explanatory documentary that is set in a beautiful Italian location and it makes use of that setting beautifully. It is a wonderful environmental tale that is also a beautiful story about these villagers and their love for their dogs. It’s a heartwarming movie throughout.

1. Belle

Belle is by far the best animated movie of the year and it signaled the return of the great Mamoru Hosoda whose last couple of movies were somewhat disappointing. This film benefits from very sophisticated, thematically rich and ambitious storytelling, but it’s also rather epic in scope and execution with stunning animation and an incredible score. Belle is just an anime powerhouse that will hopefully receive more recognition in the future.

3. The Death of Stalin

I have a big problem with this movie as it wastes its great cast and interesting premise on an overly one-note and over-the-top comedic approach. The movie’s your typical American flick that looks at Russian history through very biased eyes with no subtlety whatsoever.

2. The King’s Man

The King’s Man was this very unnecessary prequel that featured great action scenes and a terrific Rasputin character, but it was a chaotic mess in pacing and execution. It has too much action and not enough elegance and interesting storytelling. We should have gotten another sequel instead.

1. The Ice Age Adventures of Buck Wild

The Ice Age franchise should just go away already. This totally pointless spin-off made stars of these very uninteresting supporting characters. Gone is the great main cast in favor of these annoying creatures. The animation is also a major downgrade and the plot is very mediocre.
