Beauty and the Beast: The Enchanted Christmas is a 1997 direct-to-video animated film from Disneytoon Studios. It’s such a bad midquel.

Beauty and the Beast: The Enchanted Christmas Movie Review

Yes, the movie is a midquel which basically means it’s set just in the middle of the original movie, so it’s neither a prequel nor a sequel, but an entirely pointless excursion that serves no purpose at all besides wringing nostalgia from fans. The story is slim and repetitive, it’s not even worth talking about more while the characters are entirely ruined, especially Belle herself.

She is here reduced to a love interest and one who doesn’t think of anything else than to satisfy Beast. Thus, the original Belle is utterly lost, the same way that the Aladdin sequels, especially the first one, miscalculated Jasmine. She is so horrible here while Beast is better, but again rarely there at all.

The movie is mostly concerned with the other sidekick characters who are all fine, but not particularly well developed nor are they funny in any way. They are serviceable and nothing more than that. As for the movie’s villain, I have to say that I liked Forte. Tim Curry’s voice is fantastic per usual, the character is quite creepy and most of his scenes are excellent, but again the choice of him being a pipe organ is utterly random and he is thus pointless in the bigger scope of things, especially as a genuine obstacle.

The Enchanted Christmas has one pretty good song in Stories. I liked that one quite a bit and it’s charming and so well animated, but others are all very bland and tiresome, but thankfully not taking too much of the movie’s screen time.

I did like the animation, but again it’s so inferior to the original, though it mixes well computer animation in the case of Forte with the traditional one. But it’s overall just looking fine and safe with no risks taken. The dialogue is terrible, the script is so bad and the entire movie is slim and repetitive to the point of becoming very boring even for such a short runtime.

Beauty and the Beast: The Enchanted Christmas has fine animation and a good villain, but other characters are all treated so badly, the storyline is slim, repetitive and pointless, and the whole movie is beyond cheap and simply unnecessary in every single frame. It’s a midquel that nobody in this world ever needed to get.

My Rating – 2
