An Extremely Goofy Movie Movie Review

An Extremely Goofy Movie is a 2000 direct-to-video animated comedy. It’s a pretty good Disneytoon Studios flick and a fine sequel to ‘A Goofy Movie’.

An Extremely Goofy Movie Movie Review

I personally prefer the original film, though some may disagree. That’s because the entire sports-themed finale here felt very tiresome, rushed and far from a proper conclusion to this otherwise very good story. The entire third act was very weak in my honest opinion.

However, everything else was really good, surprisingly good in fact. Again, we get a story where Max is tired of his dad and wants him out of his life, and though obviously repetitive by now, it’s so well executed that I ended up liking it once again.

I found the premise solid, the college scenes are great and Goofy actually getting a girlfriend was a welcome, wonderful development. Sylvia is such a fun, charming character who is perfect for him and I found their romance suitably goofy and endearing.

Max got some great scenes as well, but this is Goofy’s movie through and through, which was a welcome change in pace from the previous movie, which focused more on the son side of things. But the other college kids are very annoying and poorly developed, not to mention quite cliched.

An Extremely Goofy Movie is a good sequel that smoothly moves the action from high school to college. The transition was well handled and some scenes are downright moving. The lack of songs bothered me, but the humor was solid here and the same should be said for dialogue and characterization. In terms of the visuals, the animation is actually pretty solid, polished and serviceable, though far from memorable in any shape or form. The movie is also well paced and quite engaging, albeit that third act was far from interesting.

An Extremely Goofy Movie is a pretty fine sequel that is weaker than the original owing to a lack of songs, a very annoying third act and some weak characters, but the romance worked, the college setting was well realized and the father-son drama is once again moving and sweet.

My Rating – 4
