The Tigger Movie Review

The Tigger Movie is a 2000 animated family film directed by Jun Falkenstein. It is a slight, very problematic Winnie the Pooh entry.

It is about Tigger searching for his family and others like him. Now, the major problem this movie has is obvious and that is of course the fact that it is solely about Tigger meaning that it is a sort of a Winnie the Pooh spin-off. And yes, that character is wonderful. However, as we all know, movies that take this approach usually fail and this is no exception. Supporting characters are supporting for a reason and I am afraid that Tigger, with all his charm, was never suited for a full-length adventure.

That is not to say that he is bad. He is still pretty solid. He has some great moments here, but those mostly happen in the first and third act with the second one sorely lacking. I loved that heartwarming ending as it was just so delightful and emotional watching Tigger realize that his real family has always been Pooh and friends. That was very touching and a perfect conclusion for this movie.

The entire plot here is pretty good on paper, especially for this character but the execution of it is, I’m afraid, quite poor. It is very odd to me that this movie didn’t get the same treatment that 2011’s ‘Winnie the Pooh’ got and that is the running time of an hour. Instead, it got 75 minutes and, needless to say, it felt prolonged and boring as the plot itself is very simple and didn’t need this many minutes. That is why both the aforementioned film and of course ‘The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh’ are much better than The Tigger Movie.

The animation is pretty solid. In fact, it is one of the strongest aspects here as it is worthy of a theatrical release and sometimes even very beautiful and warm as is this whole property. I loved the colors and I loved the simple designs and backgrounds.

But the editing is naturally problematic as is the pacing and the entire second act is pretty boring. Also, the film can be overly childish at times instead of being pleasantly childlike. And I respect Jim Cummings as he is a great voice talent, but his Tigger voice isn’t as good as the original from the 1977 version. But his Pooh voice is very good and all of the other voices are fine. I enjoyed some of the details here such as that opening book as that beginning with Tigger was very funny and endearing.

The soundtrack is easily the worst offender here. Wow, is it uninspired and annoying. Of course, The Wonderful Thing About Tiggers is a classic, but a classic just taken from previous movies. But all of the original songs are just so bland with How to Be a Tigger being quite annoying and that bouncing song being very childish. These kind of songs are childish and not childlike and there is a big difference between the two, but they are also lyrically uninspired and tonally forgettable.

The Tigger Movie has a fun opening, very good animation and such a heartwarming ending, but everything in the second act is boring and prolonged and the film should have been just an hour long as its plot is pretty simple. But the biggest offender is the soundtrack which is just so bland and the problem here is that Tigger is better off as a supporting character instead of a lead which was obvious from the beginning. It is an okay movie, but still far too slight for Winnie the Pooh standards.

My Rating – 3
