The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part is a 2019 animated action comedy film directed by Mike Mitchell. It’s such a disappointing, weak flick.

The film starts right where the first movie ended with the toys from the sister coming in and creating chaos for all of our characters. I liked that smooth transition and I found the first act overall quite solid with the exploration of Emmet’s character and his naivety and optimism being very well handled and I really liked the scenes between him and Lucy. And more on them later.

But unfortunately the movie quickly turned much worse and lost all control of its plot and I really ended up disliking both the second and the third act. The entire time travel storyline with Emmet and his future self was not only silly, but also not well executed at all. It was overly convoluted, uninteresting and unoriginal. It just became overly complicated and chaotic.

As for the other subplot with Batman and Queen Watevra Wa’Nabi, I found it also silly and although Batman of course has his moments and that line about how many movies he has is so funny, nonetheless I found him very poorly used this time around as he was relegated to this obviously less interesting and less important subplot which felt like a filler to me and it did not mash well with the other plot at all. Nothing here mashed well whatsoever.

So I liked Emmet at first and I found the exploration of his character very interesting and of course quite funny. Lucy is also  much more memorable than she was in the previous movie, but still she’s not particularly interesting and simply not fun as Emmet is. But I liked their romance quite a bit.

Queen Watevra is a ridiculous character and although I liked that song of hers first which was so funny in the lyrics which reveal how evil she is, the rest of the movie saw her reduced to stupid storytelling and silliness. The rest of the characters get some moments here and there, but are forgettable. And I found the future version of Emmet also not as amusing as the filmmakers obviously intended him to be.

The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part still has strong animation per usual for this franchise, but because we’ve seen all of this before, the movie did not gain enough momentum both in terms of its visuals and in terms of the other aspects such as world building which continues to be rich, but not well explored at all as the movie’s again rather frenetic.

I did like more emphasis on humor in this movie and not as much action as the first one, but still the second half definitely included too much action and most of it was dull. The humor itself is at times solid and some lines definitely made me smile, but the majority of it was not as strong and I found this sequel much more childish than its more adult-oriented predecessor.

The Lego Movie 2 is a very disappointing sequel which has its humorous moments and the first act is so strong with Emmet being very well utilized there, but the rest of the film became riddled with way too many silly or filler subplots and the entire time travel storyline was very annoying to me. It’s a chaotic mess of a movie which doesn’t mash well at all.

My Rating – 3
