Ready, Set, Zoom! Review

Ready, Set, Zoom! is a 1955 animated short film from the Looney Tunes series. It is a funny cartoon.

This Road Runner short is terrific. Some parts were clearly inferior, but a couple of segments are undeniable classics. The editing is especially strong this time around with the episodic structure working immensely well. The first segment with glue is easily the greatest one. The truck screwing him over was fun, but the highlight was the dynamite exploding on him just before he hit water. After watching him try to escape for at least half a minute and to explore so close to escaping was brutal and hilarious.

The next couple of scenes are weaker as we have seen the log and the fireworks situations before and done better. But the motor was so much fun and the rocket scene was frenetic and different enough that it really worked. As for that ending, I did like the twist with the other coyotes, though it was a bit odd to see them all of a sudden. The animation and sound are both splendid.

Ready, Set, Zoom! has its lesser scenes, but the rocket one is great and the dynamite segment represents cartoon comedy perfection.

My Rating – 4.2
