Onion Pacific ReviewOnion Pacific Review

Onion Pacific is a 1940 animated short from Popeye the Sailor series. It is a capably made, yet typical entry.

Popeye and Bluto have a train race and the prize is a kiss from Olive. Yes, we’ve seen this type of premise done countless times before and much better. The two fight for Olive and Popeye wins, there’s a formula to it by now. But, no matter how clichéd, this entry is so evidently well made that it managed to transcend those clichés in a big way.

The various sabotages Bluto arranged for Popeye were very well executed, the film is quite funny at times and all three of these characters got their fine moments. I really loved the ending and How Popeye beat Bluto was so amusing. But another problem bugged me here and that is the lack of any score whatsoever. The movie is too quite, albeit the sound effects of the trains were terrific.

Onion Pacific is very well made and great in its ending that it manages to transcend its clichéd premise.

 My Rating – 4
