A Date to Skate Review A Date to Skate Review

A Date to Skate is a 1938 animated short from Popeye the Sailor series. It is a very weak short that still has its strengths.

The strengths that I’m talking about lie in the beginning and ending. The beginning is so well executed with both Popeye and Olive being memorable. As for the ending, it is surprisingly refreshing in its usage of spinach as Popeye gets it from basically a man in the audience watching the movie. That was so original and charming.

But the rest of the picture can’t measure. The second act is so boring with all of those skating sequences being either standard or just plain dull. The premise itself is good, but the execution is so lifeless and tedious that it really hurt the film. It is still a solid entry, but far from the better ones.

A Date to Skate has a great original ending, but everything else is lifeless and pretty dull.

My Rating – 3.7
