Top Ten Film Posters of 2019

2019 wasn’t the best year for film posters with few exceptions obviously. This is the year of foreign movies as those got some of the best and most artistic, unique posters, and the same goes for indies. But there are some worthy blockbusters as well. So this is my list of ten best movie posters of the year with five honorable mentions.

10. Monos

This one’s as minimalist as you can be, but I prefer less than more myself. I find the color green here gorgeous, and the man on the horse all the way down being a very nice detail. It is a great poster for this visually dazzling, but flawed movie.

9. Us

Whether you take the one with the scissors or the one with the face mask, there is no denying the power of the Us posters, both telling us exactly what we need to know about this movie and its most important details while making it also very memorable.

8. How to Train Your Dragon 3

This franchise usually got some great posters, but this one is truly terrific, juxtaposing Hiccup beneath Toothless and his new love interest. It is instantly memorable and downright beautiful to look at, especially when it comes to its color palette.

7. Pokémon Detective Pikachu

The protagonist with Pikachu on his back is looking at the gorgeous city which serves as the stunning, dazzling background to this authentic poster that easily ranks as the finest poster for a blockbuster this year.

6. The Lighthouse

Although this amazing, artistic achievement of a movie deserved even better artwork, the posters that we got are still very strong. I like the one with the two actors, but I ultimately prefer the one with the lighthouse itself which utilize on its black-and-white photography beautifully.

5. The Peanut Butter Falcon

The Peanut Butter Falcon is one of the most old-fashioned movies of the year as it’s all about 19th-century Americana, so obviously the poster followed suit. Its watercolor, subdued look is intriguing and very charming with the imagery itself being excellent.

4. Portrait of a Lady on Fire

The best film of the year also received a powerful poster which captures some of the movie’s most unforgettable, most important moments which explain the picture’s title itself. It makes one instantly intrigued to see this masterpiece of a film.

3. Long Day’s Journey into Night

There is a bit of a pattern on this list with movies that I did not really love, but I respected on a technical level. This is the best representation of that. One can choose the girl in the green dress poster, but I myself prefer the one which portrays its most memorable act which is the third one. The man walking on the street surrounded by the colors of purple and red. It’s very sumptuous.

2. Queen & Slim

The boy stands on one of the letters of the film’s name while the girl is sitting on the car in what is one of the truly unforgettable posters of the year which instantly reminds you of those classic, artsy posters of yesteryear. Even more importantly, it represents a crucial scene in this powerful movie, and it reminds you of its potent central romance.

1. Honeyland

The beehive, the beekeeper, the perfect utilization of rarely seen color of yellow, and a fantastic close-up on this person and this tradition/job… Yes, all of those attributes make this poster one of a kind, and one which intrigued me long before seeing the film which itself is so good. This Macedonian documentary is lovely to watch, and its poster rightfully takes the spot of the best poster of 2019.

Honorable Mentions:

One Child NationThis poster emphasizes family and this painful law movingly with a greatly positioned family and a terrific color palette.

Frozen II – I liked most of the posters for this one, but the one with the woods and the fog is the most memorable, most intriguing one.

Uncut GemsThis one is done in black-and-white and it’s so minimalist, but stellar at capturing its protagonist so well.

Midsommar – The same goes for this poster which utilizes on the close-up so well while also signifying the interesting headwear and a memorable facial expression.

The NightingaleThe Nightingale puts the titular bird in front of the female main character and the result is fittingly dark and eerie for this brutal flick.
