Top Ten Big Mouth Characters

Big Mouth doesn’t have a huge cast of characters, but those ones that it features prominently, the show develops them very well, some are downright amazing in their complexity. So without further ado, here is my list of ten best characters from this adult Netflix comedy.

10. Elliot

Nick’s parents are particularly cringy and embarrassing, but also rather inspirational when you stop to think about them. They have no qualms about their awesome sex life and to have such a sex-positive portrayal of an older couple was refreshing. Elliot himself is especially fun and cool.

9. Missy

The biggest dork in the school, but also simply adorable in her own right, Missy is this very cute kid who has a wild imagination, she is instantly likable and her arc is always very well realized, especially as it regards her racial identity. I loved her interactions with everybody else too.

8. Connie

Connie is very amusing. This hormone monster was at one time both in charge of Jessi and Nick, which was interesting. She looks cool, she is so much fun and particularly her jabs at Jessi’s mother were the comedic highlights coming from her.

7. Jessi

Speaking of Jessi, she’s the straight man of the teenagers, the same way as Nick, so I actually find these two to be a good fit as a couple. Most of the problems teenage girls face are so well explored through her character and she is very realistic throughout.

6. Matthew

The gay kid of the show, Matthew is somewhat stereotypical in his portrayal, but ultimately they dealt with homosexuality rather subtly on the show, especially as it regards early sex, which they thankfully prolonged. I also loved that Maury was his monster and the two were so much fun together.

5. Maury

Speaking of this creep, Maury is by far the funniest and most memorable fantastical creature on the show. He looks hilarious in his grotesque design, his voice is iconic and his obsession with sex and humiliation were the source of many very funny lines of dialogue. He interacts with everybody in such a fun way and is comedy gold.

4. Lola

Lola is a bitch. There is no getting past that. I loved everything about her relationship with Jay, but she was ultimately horrible toward him. Still, despite her mean streak, she is edgy, badass and hilarious in her very rough demeanor.

3. Nick

Nick is the straight man of the show, but he works as this very relatable, grounded in reality kid who has his many problems, but he tries to deal with them one at a time. His friendship with Andrew is golden, but it was in the fourth season where he received the most development as he had to learn how to become a better man.

2. Jay

Jay to me was the most relatable kid of the bunch as he is not only crazy in his masturbation sessions, but also something of an outcast. He is the perfect Big Mouth character: he is hilarious and so much fun, but also complex, sweet and ultimately even a tragic character in his own right. I always root for him to find happiness as the little guy surely deserves it.

1. Andrew

Andrew is this disgusting pervert of a teenager with a tendency to always get in trouble with his masturbation sessions. He is very funny and cringy, but his friendship with Nick is excellent and his relationships are well explored. Maury is at his funniest with him while Andrew’s wild storylines could get quite over-the-top in the best cartoon ways. He is by far the funniest and most memorable Big Mouth character, so he gets the top spot on this list.

Honorable Mentions:

Shame Wizard – Shame Wizard is so much fun in his dark voice and the concept alone was perfect for this show. His design was also terrific.

Coach Steve – Coach Steve is your standard over-the-top, stupid man-child character who did not work at first, but later down the line he somewhat grew on me, I have to admit.

Natalie – The newly introduced transgender girl, Natalie shared a wonderful friendship with Jessi and her plight was depicted in a realistic manner.
