The World’s End Movie Review

The World’s End is a 2013 sci-fi comedy film directed by Edgar Wright and starring Simon Pegg, Nick Frost and Martin Freeman. It’s an okay, passable diversion.

Hey, it is our basic human right to be fuck ups.

This civilization was founded on

fuck ups and you know what?

That makes me proud!

The group goes to an epic pub brawl, but they encounter aliens whose purpose is alien invasion of Earth. The first movie in the Three Flavours Cornetto trilogy was a zombie horror comedy, the second one was a buddy cop movie and this third one is centered on aliens. Yes, even I who am not the biggest fan of this franchise can appreciate the diversity of genres present here.

‘Shaun of the Dead’ remains the best entry by a mile, and ‘Hot Fuzz’ is the worst. The World’s End lands squarely in the middle given that it’s never particularly good or impressive, but it’s never bad or that annoying either. It’s just passable and nothing more than that.

I did like some of the humor here quite a bit, I have to say. But, the entire first act simply went on for too long as their getting into action really took some quality time from real plot and characterization, though it was amusing at times for sure. The third act is beyond silly, and the entire alien part is fun, but overall too ridiculous to be taken seriously even for a comedy.

My main issue with this entry is that I simply never bought Simon Pegg’s Gary suddenly becoming the most irresponsible, most childish person in the group whereas Nick Frost is now the most serious guy out there. That was simply ridiculous and implausible as nobody can change from one extreme to the next that easily.

Yes, it led to a fun new team dynamic, but simply the shifting of the characterizations for these felt incredibly implausible for me. As for the others, Rosamund Pike is fine in her role and Martin Freeman is reliably good as well, but others are quite forgettable. The effects are ludicrous, the action is overwhelming and the entire storyline is very silly. The dialogue and the humor are the best parts.

‘Shaun of the Dead’ remains the best entry in Three Flavours Cornetto trilogy whereas ‘Hot Fuzz’ is the worst. That means that The World’s End lands squarely in the middle. It has fun character interactions, solid humor and dialogue, but it felt implausible in the characterization changes, the entire alien storyline was ridiculous and the action is overwhelming.

My Rating – 3
