Peninsula Movie Review

Peninsula is a 2020 South Korean action horror zombie film directed by Yeon Sang-ho. It is a pretty subpar sequel.

Jung Seok, a former soldier, along with his teammates, sets out on a mission to battle hordes of post-apocalyptic zombies in the Korean peninsula wastelands. The problem with this movie is that it simply was never as kinetic or as fun as ‘Train to Busan’ was. It’s a totally unnecessary sequel that also felt limited in scope. It needed to have been better.

The heist elements actually worked to a degree. The same goes for a couple of action sequences that are suitably entertaining and chaotic. In terms of the visuals, Peninsula is fine for what it is. Again, the pacing isn’t a problem here as the movie flows well and it is solidly engaging, but the characterization is nothing to write home about.

There is nobody here who would hold your attention as the comic relief and the protagonist in the original movie. I did not care for anybody, so the deaths thus did not hit emotionally. The storyline is also uninspired.

But my main problem with Peninsula is its extreme tonal inconsistency. This is a film that tries to be so many things all at once. It is an action horror movie that also tries to be a heist movie that also tries to be funny at times, but also serious at other times. Most of these elements failed to make a proper effect on the viewers due to the movie’s incoherent nature in structure. It’s a shame that those few elements that worked could not help the overall movie more.

Peninsula is this very tiresome sequel to Train to Busan that doesn’t really work. It has its memorable action set pieces and it is a solid diversion for the most part, but the characterization is beyond slight, the storyline is bland and the movie’s tonal inconsistency is its main issue. It doesn’t know what it wants to be, thus rendering the whole viewing experience incoherent.

My Rating – 2.5
