Pee-wee’s Big Adventure is a 1985 family comedy film directed by Tim Burton and starring Paul Reubens. It’s one of the director’s worst movies undoubtedly.

I do get how some people may like this one as it has its charming moments and especially visually it’s pretty good, but I personally cannot stand these types of characters so I really did not care for this film. Pee-wee Herman himself is pretty much one very annoying man-child who makes stupid noises and reactions and never at all did I find him amusing whatsoever.

Paul Reubens is highly annoying and unlikable in the role and I simply did not like this actor here whatsoever. The other actors and actresses are fine, but in terms of characterization, they suffer as the emphasis is almost solely on the protagonist which is unfortunate as I am not a fan of him.

The movie plays like a very childish, immature and juvenile children’s flick made for children and just for the kiddies alone. Yes, it can possibly awake the inner child in you, but to me that only happened in only a few minor instances whereas for the majority of time that tone of the movie was very grating and unlikable.

The plot is slim, though it works for this type of movie. But I have to congratulate Tim Burton on the audio-visuals and the production design which is splendid. The movie looks great owing to some terrific imagery on display and some of the contraptions and attention to detail are truly fantastic.

The same goes for the score which is absolutely terrific. I loved it so much that it’s easily the highlight of this mediocre movie. It’s very energetic, unique and in the end memorable and fun. I also found the direction from Tim Burton solid for his first effort, but unfortunately this ended up being one of his worst movies of all time. He showed some great potential here for sure, but the end result is nonetheless very mediocre.

Pee-wee’s Big Adventure looks great and it also sounds superb thanks to a terrific, memorable score. It also showcases the flashes of Tim Burton’s vision which he would later strengthen, but this first movie of his is one of his worst for sure as the plot is slim, the characters are very annoying and the very juvenile tone of the film made it seem that it was just made for the kiddies and nobody else.

My Rating – 2.5
