Mexicali Shmoes Review

Mexicali Shmoes Review

Mexicali Shmoes is a 1959 animated short film from the Looney Tunes series. It is a solid Oscar-nominated short.

Two sombrero-wearing cats, Jose and Manuel, are singing while relaxing on the Avenida de Gatos when they are taunted by Speedy Gonzales. Eventually, they decide to catch Speedy’s cousin – Slowpoke Rodriguez. He is the highlight of this short and it’s a shame that he appeared only toward the end of it.

He is an instantly memorable, funny cartoon creation that is also very well designed. The cartoon is also memorable in this duo of cats. They are different, but ultimately both are incapable to do anything right, resulting in a couple of funny sequences. I just wish that the first half was quicker in pace and funnier.

Mexicali Shmoes is a solid Speedy Gonzales cartoon that is actually more memorable for featuring his amusing cousin – Slowpoke Rodriguez.
