Meatless Flyday ReviewMeatless Flyday Review

Meatless Flyday is a 1944 animated short film from the Merry Melodies series. It is a very underrated flick.

Yes, this is an almost forgotten Merry Melody from 1944 and it needs to be watched more as it truly is a funny one. It follows a spider who chases a fly and eventually catches it, but realizes that it’s a meatless day to his major frustration. I loved that twist ending of course, that was amusing in a typical Warner Bros. fashion. But I also just loved the spider character who’s a lot of fun and his voice is fantastic as is his crazy, jokey personality.

The fly character, on the other hand, is totally underdeveloped. The spider is great, but the fly is just there to be cute. The animation is also rather poor for the series’ standards and the runtime should have been longer here as they could have milked this premise more. But still, the action and humor are both so great that they overcame the film’s flaws.

Meatless Flyday is an underrated Merry Melody with weaker visuals, but a fantastic spider character and great humor.

My Rating – 4.4
