Halloween III: Season of the Witch Movie Review

Yes, this is an immensely underrated Halloween entry which is far from great, but certainly far from bad as critics would make you believe. It’s such a solid, very interesting movie which is honestly simply batshit crazy in its plot. First of all, it’s a Halloween movie which references the original ‘Halloween’ in a TV commercial which was so bizarre to witness and the movie doesn’t connect at all to other entries in the franchise nor does it feature Michael Myers.

It’s also the only entry in the series to be a sci-fi horror film. Yes, here two people team up to find out what happened to a man they knew who was murdered and they try to expose a company which uses masks to kill people. It’s an interesting sci-fi twist that isn’t original at all as the movie is obviously influenced by ‘Invasion of the Body Snatchers’ and maybe even ‘The Stepford Wives’, but it still made for such a fun, moody experience. I really liked its mystery.

But Michael Myers is sorely missing here. I still liked the film for managing to survive without him, but the villains here aren’t all that menacing. Tom Atkins and Stacey Nelkin are a solid heroic couple, but somewhat bland and mostly forgettable. The acting is solid though.

Halloween III: Season of the Witch has slow build up which I liked. I also liked less violence portrayed here as thankfully it’s better than the previous film in that regard. But still the scares are mostly not well executed as nothing here is particularly menacing or memorable.

Halloween III: Season of the Witch Movie Review

It has very good atmosphere and build up and I liked the SF elements, but it never actually is scary which bothered me. The effects, score and sound are all pretty solid, but the dialogue could have been better. I liked this film overall and I do think it deserves more attention.

Halloween III: Season of the Witch is a highly underrated entry in the Halloween franchise which is never particularly scary and it truly is batshit crazy, but I still ended up liking its departure from the previous stories and villain by focusing on new characters, an unoriginal but fun SF angle and it also features a solid atmosphere and mystery to it.

My Rating – 3.5
