Godzilla: King of the Monsters is a 2019 monster movie directed by Michael Dougherty and starring Kyle Chandler, Vera Farmiga and Millie Bobby Brown. It’s weak sauce.

Humans must rely on Godzilla and Mothra to defeat King Ghidorah, who has awakened other Titans to destroy the world. This movie was a huge disappointment for me, though I should have expected it given that the reviews were weak and that the director was changed. Everything that Gareth Edwards did right was here discarded. Instead, we get a movie that is all about the action and there is nothing else to be found here whatsoever.

The human characters are very mediocre, much worse than before. Millie Bobby Brown was saddled with such an unfortunately thin role, which is a shame as I am a fan of hers. Kyle Chandler is forgettable and Vera Farmiga is utterly wasted on such a weak movie and dull performance. They continue to employ all these great actors for such terribly written roles.

Godzilla: King of the Monsters has some cool action set pieces, there is no denying that. The sound is great with the monster ones all being superb, the score is very good and some of the cinematography was solid. But most of it wasn’t. For some unbeknownst reason to me, they decided to make this movie entirely in fog, the ocean and the dark.

Naturally, that led to a very annoying viewing experience. Yes, some of the fights are incredibly fun and it should prove extremely entertaining and maybe even perfect for fans of disaster and action movies, but for anyone else the movie’s dark photography will prove frustrating and the lack of ideas bothersome.

The predecessor to this film at least tried to have some atmosphere and plot. This one doesn’t even try, and what it does do is make a confusing mess with a very badly written script and terrible characters. Ghidorah is highly memorable and badass, Godzilla is once again iconic and all the other monsters are great, but none of that matters when the movie is so empty otherwise.

Godzilla: King of the Monsters is a very mediocre sequel to a much better first film. The effects are good, the sound is great and some of the monster fights are terrific, but the movie’s extensive action got bothersome rather quickly, the writing is very bad and all of the film’s actors are wasted on such bland roles. The darkness in the film’s aesthetic was also quite frustrating.

My Rating – 2.5
