Freudy Cat Review

Freudy Cat is a 1964 animated short film from the Merry Melodies series. It is a subpar cartoon.

This was unfortunately the last short starring Sylvester Jr. and Hippety Hopper, which is such a shame as I love these characters. What is also unfortunate is that they did not get a proper goodbye as this is basically a filler cartoon composed of three shorts released previously. Thus, we did not get much new material and what we got was only standard.

The framing device here is the psychological one. The movie introduces its own catlike Freud character, who advises Sylvester how to confront his fears. This was initially an interesting idea as through it 40s movie conventions were gloriously lampooned with the flashback structure and psychological suspense. The problem here was that conclusion, which was unfunny and just not a good way to end the short. But the cartoons that they chose for the flashbacks were great and the movie flowed surprisingly well for a package short.

Freudy Cat has a memorable flashback structure, but overall it’s a filler short that lacked new material. It was a weak goodbye film for these characters.

My Rating – 3.4
