Don’t Breathe 2 Movie Review

Don’t Breathe 2 is a 2021 horror thriller film directed by Rodo Sayagues and starring Stephen Lang. This is one of those messy sequels that are unnecessary, but fun.

Norman now lives in solace with a young girl whom he adopted. However, a group of gangsters break into his house in order to kidnap the girl and he has to protect her. This plot is something else. Wow, did it move into ridiculous territory in the third act with that horrendous twist about organ transplants. I did not like that twist one bit and it ruined the movie for me.

Still, the first half is fairly good as they tried to once again bring back the suspense elements of the first movie in the home invasion itself. At first, it bothered me that we weren’t given the reason for this kidnapping and then the explanation bothered me even more, so a more ambiguous approach would have still worked out better.

But there is a lot of fun to be had with those two trying to evade their attackers. The movie is at its best when Norman is once again kicking people senseless. It was interesting how he got stronger opponents this time around and that elevated the action and the feeling of danger, but still he is too strong, borderline superhuman.

Stephen Lang once again steals the show in a role that he was born to play. The pure physicality that he injects into the performance is definitely impressive and he remains an intimidating presence as well. I also liked the character of the girl and how their dynamic was complicated, but still it was obvious that the horrible nature of the villains’ goal was only introduced to soften the bad nature of Norman himself.

Don’t Breathe 2 definitely has a bad script and questionable dialogue, but at least the action is fun and the house is used to the fullest advantage. I especially liked the scenes with the dangerous dog as those were so well filmed and quite thrilling to behold.

Don’t Breathe 2 has a bad script and a ridiculous twist that tried to explain it in a very dumb way. In terms of plot and dialogue, the movie is a mess. But in terms of action, it’s almost as fun as its admittedly much better predecessor while Stephen Lang remains as intimidating of a presence as ever.

My Rating – 3
