Doctor Who Series 6 Review

The sixth season of Doctor Who is a major disappointment over the very strong previous one. It is still pretty solid with some strong episodes, but the major tone and story here are frustrating.

The Impossible Astronaut and Day of the Moon are pretty good episodes. This two-parter should have been great given its terrific subject matter and time period, but we only settled with good here. It is a very interesting, well crafted story, but the one which should have been told in one episode as two were too much for it.

The Curse of the Black Spot is a very weak, uninspired and boring 17th century tale which never made use of either pirates or sirens particularly well. The Doctor’s Wife is a silly episode as it gives us a human version of TARDIS in a woman’s form, but it works because the conversations between her and the Doctor are endearing and a lot of fun.

The Rebel Flesh and The Almost People are highly good examples of everything I strongly dislike about this season. This two-part story features alien duplicates, alternate versions of each character and all of that nonsense which I do not care for at all. This season is filled with those parallel universe and the such stories and thus it lost all credibility and intelligence of the previous season. Not to mention that the show creators settled on unfortunate soapy elements here, but more on that later.

A Good Man Goes to War entirely squanders the interesting character of River Song as it turns out that she is Amy and Rory’s daughter. That is ludicrous, uninteresting and your typical soapy fantasy development which I thought Doctor Who would never get down to it, but I was wrong apparently…

Let’s Kill Hitler has a great premise, but it is unfortunately wasted on a weak execution leading to the most forgettable episode of this bunch. Night Terrors is actually one of the best episodes here and although I’ve seen this story before, the show still made use of it so well and the dolls are effectively creepy.

The Girl Who Waited is again overly convoluted and silly, but The God Complex is actually a very good ‘Shining’ influenced story with a memorable villainous creature and a solid premise. Closing Time is solid and quite a fun, though disposable, story with James Corden being very likable here. And the less said about the ridiculousness of The Wedding of River Song, the better.

So in conclusion, this season disappointed me. Some episodes are very strong, but the entire plot development with River Song and Amy and Rory is silly and soapy and the Doctor is also weaker this time around. I also do find this format with continuing stories not working for the show.

Worst Episodes: The Rebel Flesh and The Wedding of River Song.

Best Episodes: The Doctor’s Wife and Night Terrors.

My Rating – 3.4
