Doctor Who Series 13 Review

Although it is the best of the newer Doctor Who seasons, Series 13 is still far from great as we say goodbye to the Thirteenth Doctor in a muddled, not that memorable way.

Doctor Who Series 13 Review

The series follows the Thirteenth Doctor and her companions as they navigate a universe-ending anomaly called the “Flux”, while dealing with enemies and secrets from the Doctor’s past. My main issue with this season is its overly convoluted nature. They threw so many ideas into the mix that the end result is muddle and poorly scripted.

The main problem with Chris Chibnall’s storytelling is his huge emphasis on exposition and countless plot points piling on top of one another whereas he lacks the character development and heart necessary to carry these stories through the finish line. While I respected his ambition here, the execution is only so-so unfortunately.

Jodie Whittaker got a very poor treatment during her reign as the Doctor. She was actually pretty good in the role, but she received very little characterization, thus rendering her Doctor both overly cold and underdeveloped. Yaz is very cool here and their relationship was the best thing about this season, but other characters suffered due to the extreme character count. Dan Lewis was the best realized of the bunch and the most fun.

The effects are wonky, but I did appreciate the colorful exterior of this particular series. Seeing the familiar and new alien faces was also great and the show was at its best when focusing on the SF elements with the “Flux”. It was convoluted, but at least it was interesting.

Six episodes count was just not enough for this type of storyline unfortunately. It’s basically a miniseries instead of a full season, which again goes to show how rushed this new era of Doctor Who was. It’s a shame because there was a lot of potential here, but unfortunately this is the end for Whittaker’s period.

Overall, the thirteenth series of Doctor Who is just not all that great. While the genre elements were interesting, some new characters worked and the ambition was undeniable here, the convoluted nature of this screenplay was problematic and the pacing was all over the place. The show lacked heart during these last three seasons and it’s a shame that Jodie Whittaker did not receive better treatment in the script and characterization departments.

Worst Episodes: The Halloween Apocalypse and The Vanquishers.

Best Episodes: Once, Upon a Time and Village of the Angels.

My Rating – 3.6
