Doctor Who Series 10 Review

The tenth season of Doctor Who is a solid conclusion to the Twelfth Doctor’s arc, but it’s unfortunately the weakest of his three seasons.

No, of course not. Nobody’s from space.

The Pilot is easily the best episode of this entire season. It introduces us to Bill Potts wonderfully and I liked the interactions between her and the Doctor as they were dynamic and fun. Bill is a pretty good, underrated companion who definitely was underused and unfortunately just got one season for herself, but her character is fun, she is pretty charismatic, likable and also relatable. I loved her questioning of the Doctor and that made her different and relatable.

Smile is a silly episode based upon a silly premise that was executed weakly. Thin Ice is entirely forgettable and not worth talking about more. But Knock Knock is actually a lot of fun as this very atmospheric horror tale with an authentic story to it, memorable characters and a fantastic relationship between Bill and the Doctor. I also really liked David Suchet’s turn here.

Oxygen is an intriguing episode with an excellent atmosphere to it and very good premise, but it wasn’t executed to its fullest extent or potential. It’s solid, but far from great as is this entire string of five episodes that started off with this one. Extremis is also underutilized, but definitely very intriguing in its religious overtones, setting and figures. I think that that’s the first for this show and thus original.

The Pyramid at the End of the World and The Lie of the Land are basically continuations to this Monks storyline and both are solid episodes and this entire arc was definitely pretty good, if far from truly fantastic.

Empress of Mars is overly bombastic, but definitely very entertaining as this overstuffed, action packed and fun episode with solidly used Ice Warriors. The Eaters of Light is very mediocre and never utilizing on its historical period and setting well at all. World Enough and Time and The Doctor Falls are definitely fun, highly rewarding episodes with great moments for both Capaldi and Pearl Mackie to act out. Although messy, they serve as a solid conclusion to this season.

Overall, I liked this season quite a bit. Most of the episodes are just solid and the season is not as good as the eighth or ninth one, but most definitely it gave us pretty entertaining stories and a good companion in Bill Potts. Peter Capaldi’s Twelfth Doctor remains the best so far, but I am looking forward to what Jodie Whittaker is going to do in the role next season.

Worst Episodes: Smile and The Eaters of Light.

Best Episodes: The Pilot and Knock Knock.

My Rating – 3.7
