Disenchantment Season 3 Review

The third season of Disenchantment is another slight improvement over its predecessor, but the show really needs to become much better sooner rather than later.

You know, if there’s one thing I’ve learned,

it’s when you’re stuck in a cave with your psycho mum,

the best thing to do is play along

Subterranean Homesick Blues continues the story in very dark new ways and although again lacking in humor, the drama here is very strong. You’re the Bean heavily focuses on Derek, so it did not interest me as much. Beanie Get Your Gun ends interestingly, but overall it isn’t all that memorable. Steamland Confidential continues to focus on Arch Druidess, who is truly one of the best villains that this show has.

Freak Out! is a rather unimportant Elfo detour that’s only mildly entertaining. Last Splash is also a detour. It’s a lovely, romantic detour featuring Bean’s adventure with a mermaid and it’s a believable, fine choice to make her character bisexual, but overall the episode didn’t have much of a purpose besides that angle.

Bad Moon Rising and Hey, Pig Spender continue the story, but overall are slow and not memorable in any shape or form. The Madness of King Zog showcases the apparent darkness of this show, which is undoubtedly the most brutal of any Groening series so far. The way Zog was treated here was painful and heartbreaking to watch. This all culminates with Bean Falls Down where Bean becomes the queen only for a little while. That ending again is another memorable cliffhanger for the show.

Disenchantment Season 3 Review

The relationship between Bean and her dad was wonderful and truly the emotional core of this entire season of Disenchantment. The finale in particular was beautiful and you could really see troubled, but undeniable love there. Bean got a lot to do during this season and she is awesome, but the sidekicks not so much as both Elfo and Lucy only got sporadic moments of greatness and laughter.

Overall, Disenchantment really needs to progress its storyline quicker or it is in risk of alienating and/or boring audiences. I would like to see more standalone episodes from the show that clearly favors sprawling arcs. The characterization is strong as is the animation once again, but the humor continues to be the weakest link of this series that really needs to decide whether it wants to be a comedy or a drama. You can rarely have it both ways.

Worst Episodes: Bean Get Your Gun and Bad Moon Rising.

Best Episodes: Subterranean Homesick Blues and Bean Falls Down.

My Rating – 3.7
