Child’s Play 2 Movie Review

Child’s Play 2 is a 1990 slasher film directed by John Lafia and starring Alex Vincent and Brad Dourif. It’s an expectedly mediocre horror sequel.

The soul of serial killer Charles Lee Ray is still alive in the killer doll named Chucky and he continues his search for Andy to possess him and take over his body for revenge. This movie tarnished everything that was great about the original, in particular its sense of old-fashioned thrills, atmosphere and restraint.

This time around the thrills are constant, thus quickly becoming numb to the viewer. Gone is the intriguing mythology of the first movie and instead what we got was a terribly convenient, badly written opening scenario that restored Chucky implausibly. The rest of the movie consists of consistent chaos with Chucky appearing in so many sequences fully, which entirely destroyed any sense of eeriness and mystery, which was to be expected, but still it shouldn’t have been this bombastic in execution.

What also doesn’t work here is Andy’s subplot with his foster parents. He is just tortured by them as they do not believe him, so they even consider abandoning him, which was just a horrible way to portray adoptive parents. That really angered me. Alex Vincent played Andy very well and he is still a likable, cute protagonist, but I definitely missed his mom, who was sent to a psychiatric hospital in this sequel conveniently so.

Child’s Play 2 benefits from an excellent voice performance from Brad Dourif. He is the main reason to see this entire franchise and especially this particular entry that otherwise doesn’t have much else to offer. The VFX are excellent and obviously the budget was bigger here as Chucky is present throughout the movie, but again the execution of the horror scenes were too campy, not thrilling enough and certainly not classy.

Child’s Play 2 is a mediocre sequel that tarnished everything that was great about the original – its atmosphere, mythology and restraint. Here, there is no mystery and everything is so obvious and convenient in both its slasher scenes and in its main storyline. Brad Dourif’s vocal performance was terrific and Chucky was great here, but otherwise the movie doesn’t have anything else to offer.

My Rating – 2.5
