The second season of Big Mouth is another strong season of this entertaining adult animated comedy. It’s even better than its predecessor.

This season started off not all that great, but it’s the example of a season that grew better and better and ending on a terrific note. The first episode is Am I Normal? It’s not all that memorable as this transitional episode, but it does introduce Nick’s new hormone monster and he’s boring, but the next one is this very amusing submissive young freak. What Is It About Boobs? adds Gina to the main cast of characters and she’s great. The episode showcases the boys’ obsession with boobs in an amusing fashion.

The Shame Wizard is an important episode that is messy, but crucial for starting so many storylines that would run throughout this season. David Thewlis is so much fun as the titular wizard and his darkness is hilarious and his voice is easily recognizable, but perfect. Jessi’s relationship with her mother is well explored in this season as the mother’s lesbian romance really left a bruise on their relationship. I liked Nick and Gina together, but they needed more episodes.

Steve the Virgin is where Coach Steve loses his virginity finally. He is a stupid, clichéd character, but he’s difficult not care about. I loved his strange friendship with Jay here. Andrew and Lola having this crazy fling was so entertaining. The Planned Parenthood Show is by far the weakest episode of this season and the overall show so far. I get that it is of course hugely important to have an episode about abortion etc, but the execution simply wasn’t all that good with the lesson format being constraining and leaving out the entertainment factor for me.

Drug Buddies is a very drug-oriented episode that is solid, but far from memorable. Andrew is great here, but others not so much, though I do like Jessi and Nick’s friendship here. Guy Town is fun. I appreciated the emphasis on dads here and how all are different in their own way. The characterization on this show is truly outstanding.

Dark Side of the Boob features the Shame Wizard at his funniest. It was very entertaining following everybody as they try to get rid of this horrible monster. The show through this season explores the anxieties and many frustrations that teenagers face and how they shouldn’t feel shameful for them. It’s very inspirational and a great example of how awesome this show must be for teenagers watching it.

Smooch or Share is a continuation of this storyline and it culminates with the Shame Wizard finally being banished. The Truth or Dare portion of the episode is the highlight with the Jay/Matthew kiss opening up questions about Jay’s sexuality intriguingly.

The finale is The Department of Puberty and it’s terrific. Finally seeing the world of the hormone monsters was fantastic and the choice to give Connie to Nick as the new monster was an inspired choice. Jay’s bisexuality is hilariously showcased through his sexual escapades with his male and female furniture. His sexual explorations and his crazy home appliances sessions are very relatable and so funny.

Overall, the second season of Big Mouth is a slight improvement upon the previous one. It started off weakly, but ended so strong. The second half is great, sophisticated and also very funny. The highlight continues to be the character development. Andrew was the MVP before, but here Jay, Jessi and Nick got more and more development along with Matthew and Coach Steve. Missy is so endearing and her sexual awakening was one of the best arcs of the season along with her relationship with Andrew.

Worst Episodes: Am I Normal? and The Planned Parenthood Show.

Best Episodes: Smooch or Share and The Department of Puberty.

My Rating – 4
