Best and Worst Films from September 2021

Best Films from September 2021:

3. Candyman

The original Candyman movie from the nineties is infinitely better than the recently released remake. It’s gory for sure, but it’s a great, actually subtle social commentary on race relations that doesn’t ever feel too shoehorned in. The urban myth at the center was intriguing while the psychological thriller elements were also excellent. It’s a very unique movie that ranks among the best that 90s horror has to offer.

2. Shang-Chi

One of my personal favorite Marvel movies ended up being Shang-Chi, a film that is genuinely entertaining and funny without being annoying. The characters are uniformly great with Awkwafina stealing the show from everyone else. The movie also operates on fantastical levels as it genuinely became an epic fantasy in the second half and not just a martial arts flick. It’s one of the most imaginative and charming MCU movies and one of the best in quite a while.

1. The Green Knight

Yes, this movie may have been polarizing to audiences, but I side with the critics on this one as David Lowery blew me away with how he’s modernized this old 14th century poem for the modern times. Dev Patel is great and the protagonist getting a genuine character arc was wonderful while the cinematography and score worked in tandem to create a timeless piece of literary cinematic adaptation.

3. Ride with the Devil

One of the weakest movies I’ve seen from Ang Lee so far has to be this western flick. It is very well acted for sure, but it’s also populated with too many characters and it’s just way too long, thus it’s not a particularly engaging watch unfortunately. It has its moments, but watching it as a whole, it failed to deliver.

2. Cinderella

The 2021 Cinderella movie starring Billy Porter is a mess. Yes, it’s fun, colorful and charming, but it’s also on-the-nose in its very badly written dialogue and underwritten in its characters. It also felt too modern, which some may like, but to me a more old-fashioned approach would have been better in this instance.

1. Don’t Breathe 2

Don’t Breathe 2 is quite inferior to its predecessor. It has its fun pulpy thrills for sure as the home invasion elements are once again effective, but the plot simply fell apart in that ridiculous second half with a terrible twist that made no sense. In terms of plot, they simply did not know where to go in any meaningful or sensible manner.
