Adventure Time Season 7 Review

The seventh season of Adventure Time is an improvement upon its immediate predecessor, but it was still inferior to the original couple of seasons.

Bonnie & Neddy is a charming, but slight episode that was rather forgettable at the end of the day. Varmints is a solid Marceline episode where she shined bright, though the overall story was just okay. Cherry Cream Soda is one of those silly episodes dealing with side characters that pretty much act as filler. Mama Said is adventurous, but far from memorable. Football is one of the lesser B.M.O. episodes.

Stakes is pretty much a miniseries inside this season that consists of eight parts and all eight episodes are about some kind of change and the cyclical nature of things. It saw the best use of Marceline yet and the overall story was surprisingly strong and deep. Marceline the Vampire Queen and Everything Stays started off this ambitious story solidly while Vamps About is action-heavy and quite high in stakes. The Empress Eyes is also epic while May I Come In? is more adventurous in approach. Take Her Back is less memorable, but Checkmate and The Dark Cloud ended this story very strongly with memorable fights and an excellent main villain.

The More You Moe, the Moe You Know is yet another B.M.O. episode that has a lot of heart, but by now these all start to blend in together. It should not have been a two-parter. Summer Showers is a bright light in this otherwise unfunny season as Lumpy Space Princess is absolutely hilarious in the bossy attitude here. The episode is so funny that it reminded me how humorous this show once was and they eventually lost that humorous edge.

Angel Face is forgettable and slight, President Porpoise Is Missing! is also not great but it does have a memorable Ice King, and Blank-Eyed Girl benefits from a pretty strong mystery at its center. Bad Jubies isn’t the best episode in terms of storytelling, but it features stunning stop-motion animation, which was a breath of fresh air for the show stylistically speaking.

King’s Ransom is a fun and solid Ice King episode. Scamps is childish and one-note. Crossover is darker in tone and rather intriguing. As for The Hall of Egress, it is by far the best episode of this entire season as it saw Finn trying to break away from a certain trap. It’s an eerie and ominous story that functions as a metaphor for midlife crisis while being just so riveting throughout. Flute Spell has its moments and is overall serviceable, but The Thin Yellow Line ended the season weakly with an uninspired Princess Bubblegum storyline.

Overall, the seventh season of Adventure Time has its terrific episodes that are imaginative and admirably darker in tone. It is overall better than the last season. The problem here was once again an overemphasis on insignificant side characters and a definite lack of humor throughout.

Worst Episodes: Cherry Cream Soda, Angel Face and The Thin Yellow Line.

Best Episodes: Stakes Part 8: The Dark Cloud, Summer Showers, King’s Ransom and The Hall of Egress.

My Rating – 3.7
