Violet is a widowed mother who goes to an upscale restaurant to meet Henry, her charming and handsome date. However, her pleasant evening soon turns into a living nightmare when she receives phone messages from a mysterious, hooded figure who threatens to kill her young son and sister unless she kills Henry. First off, this premise was admittedly ridiculous. It was never explained why this had to be done by Violet and it was all hastily written.

With that being said, the movie actually worked because it was well executed. It’s a rare case of a poor premise being lifted to greater heights instead of the other way around. It’s a technological thriller that managed to wring the most suspense out of its tech-paranoia conceit. The idea of her messages appearing on the screen in this very menacing way with the enlarged letters was a sound one and it was my favorite element here.

Meghann Fahy was absolutely fantastic here. She garnered fame from her memorable turn in the second second of ‘The White Lotus’ and I am glad that she got this project to showcase her acting talents. The actress delivered a truly magnificent performance where you can see so much anguish and desperation on her face throughout. She killed it and is the best reason to see this flick.

Brandon Sklenar was very good and quite charming in the role of Henry. He is also quite an underrated actor. I loved the romantic and awkward dynamic between the two. The villain was fun and sinister for sure in that over-the-top and cartoonish manner, but the third act failed to register. The villain scenes worked for me, but that action sequence in the restaurant was too silly and the later shootout was also messy.

But Drop for the most part was a very entertaining and effective thriller that was so well directed, particularly well paced and fueled by great energy and a very thrilling, ominous tone in every scene. Most of the situations in the first half were so interesting and they got the most out of them in terms of both suspense and fun.

Drop is a highly entertaining thriller that managed to elevate its admittedly silly premise thanks to very strong execution across the board, notwithstanding the messy third act. The ominous atmosphere was well conveyed, the majority of the situations were quite interesting, and the film got the most out of its tech paranoia concept. It’s particularly worth seeing for the central performance from Meghann Fahy. She was truly excellent.
