A Minecraft Movie Movie Review
A Minecraft Movie is a 2025 fantasy adventure comedy film directed by Jared Hess and starring Jack Black and Jason Momoa. It’s a highly entertaining and perfectly solid flick.

Four misfits are suddenly pulled through a mysterious portal into a bizarre cubic wonderland that thrives on imagination. To get back home they’ll have to master this world while embarking on a quest with an unexpected expert crafter. Based on the titular 2011 video game that I of course know about but haven’t played, this movie could have turned out much worse than it did. They at least tried to develop a storyline and a lived-in world and they mostly succeeded at it.
This is the type of frenetic, silly and dumb blockbuster that is in line with ‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie’ in its style and tone. As somebody who appreciated that flick for what it is, I also managed to dig this goofy movie. It’s certainly messy and fast paced to the extreme, but I was engaged throughout, which is the most important thing for a blockbuster to do.
Jason Momoa was so well cast in the role of Garbage Man. This man-child obsessed with everything eighties was the most fun character in the entire film and Momoa was very charismatic and suitably goofy in the role. He should always perform these comedic and buffoonish characters.

Jack Black was another standout as this guy obsessed with the world of Minecraft. His singing skills are showcased beautifully here and that final number was a whole lot of fun. I loved his character and he made me laugh numerous times, but I wished for the two to have shared more screen time together.
Jennifer Coolidge was expectedly amusing in a small, but delightful role. Danielle Brooks was wasted on a forgettable and underutilized character. As for the two kids, the girl was pretty uninteresting and forgettable while the boy was your standard family movie kid protagonist with no discernible qualities of his own.
A Minecraft Movie is at its best when focusing on its world building and silly villains. Those pig bad guys were absolutely hilarious. The main villain made me laugh out loud numerous times due to her quirky line delivery and that final gag that was just hysterical. The other creatures were all pretty much underdeveloped, but I found their designs and a seeming lack of purpose quite memorable.

The adventurous elements worked for me and the same goes for the world building. The stocky design was both funny and it fitted the source material at hand. The sheep was amusing, the zombies were ridiculous, and how the characters made things out of these blocks was quite interesting, though nowhere near as imaginative as this storytelling device could have been. The score, cinematography and production design were just serviceable, but the overall effects were solid. The humor was childlike in the best way possible and the silly nature to it made it wildly enjoyable and charming.
A Minecraft Movie is as messy and as frenetic as expected, but it’s also a wildly entertaining and delightfully silly blockbuster that will be enjoyable to anyone who goes into it with an open mind. Jack Black and Jason Momoa were both perfectly cast in their memorable goofy roles. The world building was solid and the humor really worked for me. The story is serviceable, but it was elevated with a great sense of fun and a fittingly irreverent tone.
My Rating – 3.5
