Little Nemo is a 1911 animated short film directed by Winsor McCay. It truly is a revolutionary film.
Yes, even though ‘How a Mosquito Operates’ and ‘Gertie the Dinosaur’ are obviously better films, Little Nemo came before them so it has to be respected even more. I’ve had a big problem with the film’s structure as it’s basically a live-action movie with the animation only being present in the third act. But still, I liked seeing the director’s struggles and his bet to make a fully animated, moving picture.
It’s based on his famous comic-strip and I personally really like these characters and the story. It’s a shame that thus the film really doesn’t have a story, but it’s a 1911 film so obviously it has its limitations. However, the characters themselves look amazing and so detailed and truthful to their origins. The animation itself is wonderful, the movements are extremely realistic for its time and the film is pleasantly colorful and charming. The highlight was listening to classical music why those drawings came to life in an epic manner.
Little Nemo has its limitations, but the animation itself is absolutely fantastic and the film should be admired for its groundbreaking nature.
