Mrs. Doubtfire is a 1993 family comedy film directed by Chris Columbus and starring Robin Williams and Sally Field. It is a flawed, but charming film.

Mrs. Doubtfire Movie Review

………………………………………………….

This is surely one of my childhood favorites as I have watched it on TV as a kid multiple times. As an adult, it is nowhere near as magical and some ugly flaws are revealed to me now, but it still holds up pretty well and is a good film overall.

All of these drag comedy films such as this one and ‘Tootsie’ are pretty dated in today’s society where trans women and drag queens are getting more and more recognition and respect. And surely enough, there are some scenes here that are awfully uncomfortable, dated and transphobic with the urination exposition scene being the most obvious offender.

Still this film is so charming, wonderful and endearing that you can’t help but enjoy it tremendously. It did not need to last for two hours, but it is so entertaining and wonderfully childlike that it mostly flies by and I’ve had such a great time watching it. The overall story promotes fatherhood in a great, meaningful manner and I honestly loved that the two did not stay together, but found a way for both to have a lot of time with the kids. That was great.

Mrs. Doubtfire Movie Review

………………………………………………….

Robin Williams’ humor is pretty dated in my opinion as it is overly theatrical. And this movie is never truly hilarious and although funny at times, it should have been much funnier having in mind it’s a comedy. But still it is amusing and his character here is amazing and really well developed and imagined. He definitely gave one of his stronger performances here.

Sally Field is also great and reliably fantastic in the wife’s role. I loved the relationship between the two and to me the film succeeded in realistically portraying a marriage that is ending. The kids are fine, but should have been more memorable. And Pierce Brosnan is very well cast as this potential love interest for Miranda and he did a good job in the role.

Mrs. Doubtfire is the best in the scenes with the character being in the house with the children and talking with the wife. I wish it had more such scenes. The restaurant scene is very typical in its situational comedy, but still very well done. I also really liked the animation scene at the beginning.

………………………………………………….

Mrs. Doubtfire Movie Review

………………………………………………….

The movie is very well made and superbly acted and also directed by Chris Columbus who was a perfect choice for this family flick. It is long, but entertaining and mostly solidly paced. Of course the make-up is amazing and deservedly won an Oscar. I definitely thought that the film was overly sentimental at times, but still undeniably sweet and moving in those scenes. Overall, it isn’t quite as good as when I saw it as a kid, but it still holds up well.

Mrs. Doubtfire is a childhood favorite that is overly dated in some of its humor and sometimes excessively sentimental, but still it holds up pretty well thanks to Robin Williams’ very strong performance in a highly memorable role, some charming and funny scenes and a great ending. It is a very flawed, but undeniably sweet and pleasant family flick.

Wind River (2017)

Wind River Movie Review

Wind River Movie Review

Wind River is a 2017 western mystery thriller film directed by Taylor Sheridan and starring Elizabeth Olsen and Jeremy Renner. This is a very competent genre film.

………………………………………………….

Why is it that whenever you people try to help us,

you always insult us first, huh?

………………………………………………….

Wind River Movie Review

………………………………………………….

I am usually not a fan of thrillers, but this one is surprisingly strong, moving and rich that I ended up liking it quite a bit, though not as much as the critics for sure. It is even more so a mystery than a thriller and with strong western elements to it as well and that interesting mix really worked in its favor.

There are not a lot of films that revolve around snowy, remote parts of America and thus I loved this one. It has a different setting and a different mood to it and both complement the story beautifully. And an even bigger reason why I admire the film is its inclusion of Native Americans which was wonderful.

They are portrayed as good people and the end credits stating that missing Indian women are the only group that is not evidenced by police was just terrible to realize and I admire the film for taking a stance against that and for finally promoting their rights and giving a good name for their people.

Jeremy Renner and Elizabeth Olsen are both of the MCU fame having together appeared in ‘Age of Ultron’ and again their dynamic here is very strong. I loved the relationship between the two. He struggles with his grief of having lost his daughter and she is a tough agent who tries to remain calm and tough despite the awful circumstances. The villain is typical, but I loved Martin as he is such a great character. The highlight was seeing him and Cory share their grief at the end.

………………………………………………….

Wind River Movie Review

………………………………………………….

Wind River should have had better character development. It is solid, but the film demanded much greater characterization. But the acting is very strong across the board. The direction is also strong as is the dialogue. The film is rarely as smart or as original as you would expect, but the emotional resonance is very strong as it is very tough to watch and heartbreaking at times. I loved the cinematography and the mood and atmosphere of the film are quite remarkable and different.

Wind River needed stronger characterization, but the acting is very good across the board and the film is emotionally resonant and sometimes difficult to watch and quite heartbreaking. It mostly succeeds because of its different than usual setting, excellent atmosphere and mood and good direction. It is also very admirable that finally Hollywood gave us a movie about Native Americans that strongly spotlights their issues with that important and alarming final statement.

Atomic Blonde (2017)

Atomic Blonde Movie Review

…………………………………………………

Atomic Blonde Movie Review

Atomic Blonde is a 2017 action spy film starring Charlize Theron and James McAvoy. It is a solid, fun action flick.

………………………………………………….

You’ve got some balls breaking in here.

You should see my balls.

Then you’d be really impressed!

………………………………………………….

Atomic Blonde Movie Review

………………………………………………….

Atomic Blonde is not a movie you watch for the plot. It certainly isn’t. That being said, even with the low expectations of a spy action genre, this was still a very weak storyline which sometimes made no sense, it tried to be cool too many times and it had too many twists and turns which felt silly and unbelievable instead of the intended cool factor.

Also, the characters are not great. The actors are great, but the characters they play are mostly very slim and underdeveloped. David Percival is somewhat okay and interesting, Delphine being out of her depth in this spy business was well explored and the protagonist is kickass, but definitely an underutilized entity as we do not learn anything about her. All of the others are forgettable.

James McAvoy gave a reliably strong, menacing performance and Sofia Boutella is also pretty good and memorable. This is definitely Charlize Theron’s movie to shine and she steals the whole thing easily. The movie basically has her be naked and have sex half the time and kick the asses of communists the other times and it worked despite its sensational approach as she truly is badass. Her performance is good and her fighting was awesome. She truly has become a very strong action star.

………………………………………………….

Atomic Blonde Movie Review

………………………………………………….

Atomic Blonde needs to be seen for its action. The action sequences here are exhilarating in their quality and stupendously exciting and entertaining. And also consistently badass and cool. I loved how she had to use her brain against the stronger men and that was very cool and realistic. The highlight was the scene with the rope which was a lot of fun and very inventive.

The movie is very entertaining and thus it flies by quickly although it definitely lacks structure, strong story and characterization. But it is very well filmed with some great location work and of course a very cool, strong late 80s soundtrack that fitted the mood of the movie so well.

The plot and characterization are weak in Atomic Blonde and some scenes felt too silly. However, this is the movie you watch for the action as it is a spy action flick and it succeeds in that department as the action sequences are exhilarating and incredibly entertaining. The score is also pretty cool. Charlize Theron entirely steals the show here. She is incredible, kickass and is quickly becoming one of the biggest action stars today.

Murder on the Orient Express Movie Review

Murder on the Orient Express is a 1974 mystery film directed by Sidney Lumet and starring Albert Finney, Lauren Bacall and Ingrid Bergman among others. It’s a solid, but flawed adaptation.

………………………………………………….

Bianchi, Doctor, has it occurred to you that

there are too many clues in this room?

………………………………………………….

Murder on the Orient Express Movie Review

………………………………………………….

The book is one of Agatha Christie’s best works and I love it, but this cinematic adaptation was not all that great and I do think it is overrated. It is solid and very faithful in terms of story but it has its many problems.

I liked how faithfully it adapted the book and the storyline here is excellent and quite engaging to follow. I loved the ending and it was so well executed with the finale being phenomenal and the monologue from Poirot of course being fantastic. Those were great but I thought that the investigation itself was somewhat rushed in some instances.

Another problem is the pacing which is not all that great. The film definitely is involving, but I thought that the runtime of 130 minutes was too much for this particular story and thus the first act is awfully overdrawn. That beginning did not need to last for that long and the investigation scenes suffered because of it.

Let’s talk about the acting and the characters. I am going to comment upon most of them so here we go. Let’s first talk about the elephant in the room and get him out of the way. Hercule Poirot. Oh boy, this is not going to be pleasant. Albert Finney is horrible as Poirot. How did he receive an Oscar nomination baffles me.

………………………………………………….

Murder on the Orient Express Movie Review

………………………………………………….

He is just not Poirot. I guess he gave a good performance as he is a famous, good actor. But the characterization itself is awful and he yells too much, the voice is all wrong and only some of the mannerisms speak true to the actual book counterpart. Everything else is terrible here. David Suchet is infinitely better.

Lauren Bacall, on the other hand, is excellent and very memorable in her role. Ingrid Bergman is absolutely fantastic in a small role and I loved her as this Swedish, complex woman and I am glad that she got an Oscar for her performance. Thoroughly deserved.

Wendy Hiller is very good as Princess Dragomiroff and faithfully depicted. The same goes for Rachett and every other character as well. Only Poirot is the problem here and because he is at the center, that is why I give this movie a bad time, but all of the other players are amazing and this film truly has a spectacular ensemble cast. Sean Connery was also quite memorable and Anthony Perkins as McQueen is absolutely perfect casting for this interesting role and he did wonderfully here.

………………………………………………….

Murder on the Orient Express Movie Review

………………………………………………….

Murder on the Orient Express is very well scored with some memorable segments. But the cinematography is superb and I loved how the train looked and the stations too. It is very polished in quality and very much a cinematic work instead of a TV production. Sidney Lumet did a great job in the directorial chair as well. The film did deserve a win for Bergman, but a nod for Finney was unwarranted. However, the noms for cinematography, costumes and score are all very much deserved. It is in the end a pleasantly old-fashioned and mostly fine, but not great adaptation.

The 1974 cinematic adaptation of Murder on the Orient Express is a perfectly solid, but highly flawed one. The first act is overlong, but the score, costumes and cinematography are all excellent and deservedly Oscar nominated. The film is engaging, faithful to its source material and with a particularly spectacular ensemble cast with everyone being well cast and giving a great performance with Oscar-winning Ingrid Bergman being the highlight. But Albert Finney is the only weak link. He is just not Poirot. He doesn’t act or look like him at all. Very bad casting coupled with terrible characterization made the most important character feel alien here.

RoboCop (1987)

RoboCop Movie Review

RoboCop Movie Review

RoboCop is a 1987 science fiction action film directed by Paul Verhoeven. It is a campy, but surprisingly solid genre flick.

………………………………………………….

I’d buy that for a dollar!

………………………………………………….

RoboCop Movie Review

………………………………………………….

I actually enjoyed this movie for the most part and that I did not expect at all so it was a pretty pleasant surprise over all. In particular the storyline is the strongest aspect here along with the emotional resonance. The film has some quite moving moments and I really liked the main character and his solid development.

Officer Anne Lewis is also pretty solid and those two share the best moments with all of the other characters being forgettable. The acting is nothing to write home about, but at least the characterization is pretty solid.

I do not know what critics find that is clever or thematically rich in RoboCop as to me it is just a sci-fi action flick and there is nothing wrong with that but I do not like when they assign more to a pretty straightforward film which has pretty good storytelling and many memorable plot points and scenes, but it is just never smart.

As for its problems, well RoboCop is basically your regular eighties movie and by that I mean that the camp excess is evident from the get-go. The film is very campy, very silly and at times quite cheesy too. The scenes where he fights crime were easily the worst offenders here as they were beyond silly and campy.

………………………………………………….

RoboCop Movie Review

………………………………………………….

But it is mostly a very well made film which takes its time to get there owing to a somewhat standard first act, but the third act is the highlight and the second act is fun despite it being very dated and silly in approach.

The special effects are not the best and the android does not look great at all. He is memorable in his design, but not really great or inspired. I also thought that the action was fun, but definitely dated in execution. The pacing and editing are solid and the direction is fine. It is mostly a solid blockbuster flick which is as good as these 80s action flicks can be.

RoboCop definitely is incredibly silly, campy and cheesy in a typical 80s fashion, but it is actually a surprisingly solid, even charming sci-fi action flick with solid characters, fun action and a particularly entertaining and at times even emotionally resonant story with a couple of memorable plot points and sequences.

Three Colors: White (1994)

Three Colors: White Movie Review

Three Colors: White Movie Review

Three Colors: White is a 1994 French-Polish comedy drama film directed by Krzysztof Kieslowski and starring Zbigniew Zamachowski and Julie Delpi. It is a weak sequel.

………………………………………………….

What counts on bridge is memory. And mine is excellent

………………………………………………….

Three Colors: White Movie Review

………………………………………………….

It is about equality with the film depicting Karol Karol, a shy man who, after being left by his wife in humiliating circumstances in Paris, loses his money, his residency, and his friends. As a deeply ashamed beggar in Warsaw, Karol begins his effort to restore equality to his life through revenge.

The film may sound good on paper, but in the actual execution it is far from good. Whereas the previous film in the trilogy was very much a drama and a tragedy, this is more of a comedy even though the circumstances are not really comedic. It is a black comedy in its style.

And that did not work for me at all. Kieslowski just does not know how to do comedy and he should have done a straight drama instead as the humor here wasn’t great and the film is not funny, at least not to me. I also really did not like its crime elements introduced later on.

Karol Karol is a fine protagonist and I sympathized with him. Zbigniew Zamachowki definitely gave a very strong performance in the main role. Julie Delpi, on the other hand, is just not as memorable as she plays a basic bitch and nothing more than that.

………………………………………………….

Three Colors: White Movie Review

………………………………………………….

Three Colors: White is weakly directed by Kieslowski and ‘Three Colors: Blue’ was in my opinion a much better, more emotional and overall richer film. Here only the first act worked as it was quite moving in its couple of scenes and I rooted for the main character and felt sorry for him. The movie then lost all of its power when it tried to be funny and it went into an odd black comedy territory that just did not work for me. It isn’t a bad movie, but it is pretty weak overall.

Three Colors: White is much inferior to its predecessor. It is well acted and I liked the first act. But the rest was just not good. The film then went into odd black comedy territory and that just did not work for me as it wasn’t funny and it wasn’t interesting too. It’s a weak sequel.

The Crowd (1928)

The Crowd Movie Review

The Crowd Movie Review

The Crowd is a 1928 silent drama film directed by King Vidor and starring James Murray and Eleanor Boardman. It is a very strong, effective film.

………………………………………………….

Look at that crowd! The poor boobs… all in the same rut!

………………………………………………….

The Crowd Movie Review

………………………………………………….

This is one of the better films out there that deal with the American Dream in particular. That concept is so well realized here as a man arrives to New York City to search for great life and job, but struggles to maintain it and realizes that he is just one piece of a much bigger puzzle – one man in a crowd of many other competent, successful men.

I thought that when it comes to harsh realities of living in a big city, The Crowd very much succeeds and it painted that harsh, but realistic picture so well. Certainly the film employs some melodrama in it per usual for the era, but it was mostly done minimally and the result is one of the better films from this period and one of the most emotionally resonant.

James Murray and Eleanor Boardman both did a really good job. I respected the director for not employing bigger name talent as this film is and should be about ordinary people and thus that casting choice paid off significantly. She is very good, but Murray is the highlight as he delivered such a strong, great performance and he is the heart and soul of this film.

I wasn’t that big of a fan of Bert Roach as Bert. I thought the actor did a good job, but the character wasn’t really necessary to the movie which is much better when it relies just on these two as their relationship is strong and tender and I loved it.

………………………………………………….

The Crowd Movie Review

………………………………………………….

Some of the highlights of course include that crowd sequence which was beautifully shot and unforgettable in its quality and of course that heartwarming ending which was a wonderful happy ending and a great way to portray the crowd in a lighter way too. Really well done. The film can also be pretty romantic at times.

The direction from King Vidor is outstanding and he directed this movie highly professionally and his role is certainly the most important one here. But the cinematography is the standout aspect as it is absolutely magnificent with many highly original camera angles and takes. It looks polished and timeless.

Masterfully directed by King Vidor, emotionally resonant and rich and relevant in its themes, The Crowd truly is a phenomenal cinematic achievement with many truthful quotes and observations, very strong performances, a heartwarming ending and a particularly effective, inventive and incredible cinematography. It remains a strong, resonant drama to this day.

Ingrid Goes West (2017)

Ingrid Goes West Movie Review

Ingrid Goes West is a 2017 indie dramedy film starring Aubrey Plaza and Elizabeth Olsen. It is one of the best indie flicks of the year.

………………………………………………….

Talk about something cool, like food or clothes or Joan Didion!

………………………………………………….

Ingrid Goes West Movie Review

………………………………………………….

It follows socially awkward, mentally unstable Ingrid who would stop at nothing to impress an Intagram star and make friends with her. This is a perfect example of a strong dramedy with excellent drama as well as comedy elements.

Let’s first talk about the comedy. This is the type of cringe comedy that really works. It is cringy as hell and very awkward to watch, but also incredibly funny at times in all of its awkwardness. Following Ingrid constantly embarrassing herself is a painful and awkward, yet also hilarious experience. The highlights were the first and some of the second act when she tried to make friends with Taylor and at what lengths she would go to do that.

………………………………………………….

Ingrid Goes West Movie Review

………………………………………………….

But Ingrid Goes West is possibly even better as a drama. This film is very sophisticated and painfully truthful and observational in its story and especially characters. I have always loved films that ridicule humanity as a whole as I am mostly a misanthrope in my life. That is how I feel and thus this movie was perfect for me.

It showcases brilliantly and painfully how awful human beings can really be. It portrays the entire social network culture and its “stars” as shallow, boring and just awful people who just chase celebrities and fame and to have more fake friends. Its portrayal of Instagram is so realistic, but it also portrays people’s interactions in real life and those are just as fake and full of act.

………………………………………………….

Ingrid Goes West Movie Review

………………………………………………….

People are just acting to care about others, they are pretending that they enjoy other people’s company and they are constantly hiding their ugly truths and inventing lies to be more popular in the crowd. This is how most, not all, but a majority of people act and live and thus the film is very realistic and I loved it for that. And I related to it as that is how I personally feel about humanity. But still it isn’t too dark as its ending is at least somewhat sweet and hopeful and showing that sometimes people do show real empathy toward others. That was great too.

Ingrid is a great character. She is truly mentally disabled but I never hated her and I even sympathized with her and felt sorry for her which is a testament to excellent character development and a truly strong performance from Aubrey Plaza who surprised me here a lot how good she was. Elizabeth Olsen is also great as Taylor who is a highly realistic shallow celebrity. Dan Pinto is actually the most likable person of the bunch here, probably the only likable and he was needed to help us go through the movie filled with all these awful people. Ezra was typical and Nicky as well but both served their purpose successfully.

………………………………………………….

Ingrid Goes West Movie Review

………………………………………………….

Ingrid Goes West did not need that crime element with Nicky, it was totally unnecessary and the movie went too far with it. But other than that, I loved it. The pacing is great and the film flows so well and flies by how incredibly entertaining it is. The dialogue is superb and quite grounded in reality and the film portrays obsession in a really uncomfortable, but powerful manner. It goes through a variety of emotions and leaves you amused, ashamed and even disturbed.

Ingrid Goes West is an amazing indie dramedy which goes through a variety of emotional states leaving me amused at first then ashamed and then even disturbed. It is an excellent cringe comedy which is frequently hilarious in its very uncomfortable, awkward social interactions, but it is also phenomenal as a drama with many excellent and truthful observations about humanity. Instagram “stars” here are portrayed as shallow, boring attention seekers and not only in social media, but also in real life people are constantly acting, pretending and lying around other people and the film portrayed that painfully, but accurately. This is basically how I feel about most people so I related with it tremendously.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales Movie Review

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales is the fifth entry in this franchise starring Johnny Depp and this time directed by Joachim Ronning and Espen Sandberg. It’s quite solid.

………………………………………………….

I saw her ankles. You would’ve seen a lot more

if you kept your cakehole shut

………………………………………………….

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales Movie Review

………………………………………………….

This entry is a certain improvement over the previous film which was easily the worst in the entire series. This one is weaker than the original trilogy, but at least a step in the right direction. Although I have to say that I wasn’t thrilled with that post-credits sequence at all. I do not like when they bring back old or dead characters as the sixth entry will supposedly be about Elizabeth, Will and Davy Jones. Not a fan for now.

Here the storyline is actually quite solid though the film is definitely very jumbled in its execution and it tries to have too many plot points in it and thus most are left underutilized. I liked that finally we get a two-hour Pirates film but it still felt overdrawn thanks to its weak pacing and too much action sequences.

………………………………………………….

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales Movie Review

………………………………………………….

I dislike Javier Bardem and I have just never cared for him. Here is the same. He did a good job and Salazar is a solid villain, but I would have liked to have seen somebody else personally. Henry Turner and Carina Smith are actually quite solid new additions to the team. Certainly they felt like imitations at times of Elizabeth and Will, but I liked their relationship quite a bit. She is an overly aggressive feminist character and he is typical, but they are miles better than Penelope Cruz’s character in the previous film.

I was sad to see Captain Barbossa die. That was a powerful sequence, but still not necessary. I liked that she turned out to be his daughter, but the two did not seem like father and daughter to me personally and their relationship was underdeveloped and thus his death did feel unnecessary.

Gibbs is solid and it was nice seeing Elizabeth and Will again. That ending was perfect in my opinion. Not only the romantic reunions but Jack bickering about it was so funny. Speaking of Jack, he is the weakest link here. He felt overly drunk and not in control this time around and actually he wasn’t all that much in the movie. He should be the center of each Pirates film and thus I was incredibly disappointed that this time around that wasn’t the case.

………………………………………………….

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales Movie Review

………………………………………………….

Dead Men Tell No Tales is very well made with again excellent scenery and special effects. The score is also pretty strong per usual. The direction is solid, but you’d expect the directors of high-spirited adventure ‘Kon-Tiki’ to do a much better job than what they did in the end. So the film is perfectly solid, but very flawed across the board. The action is well executed but the humor should have been better.

Dead Men Tell No Tales suffers from not having enough Jack in it, the pacing is all over the place and the story is fine, but underutilized in too many plot points. The action is solid, but again overwhelming. The new characters are actually quite fine and the ending was the highlight of the film. It is eventually a pretty solid film that is weaker than the original trilogy, but a certain improvement over the last worst entry.

Big Hero 6 (2014)

Big Hero 6 Movie Review

…………………………………………………

Big Hero 6 Movie Review

Big Hero 6 is a 2014 animated superhero film which is the 54th Disney animated feature film. It is one of the weaker Disney entries. Solid, but highly flawed.

………………………………………………….

There are no red lights during car chases!

………………………………………………….

Big Hero 6 Movie Review

………………………………………………….

The story of a young robotics prodigy who forms a superhero team to fight a masked villain is pretty typical and not all that interesting. This is a basic superhero origin story which felt very rushed and abrupt in its execution. The film flies by quickly and its pacing is absolutely horrible and from it stem all of its biggest problems.

It is frenetic and hectic with too much action and not enough substance. Well, there is a big heart at its core, but all of those great emotional scenes were rushed in favor of the all that prolonged action. The assembling of the team was so incredibly rushed, the entire death of a brother felt unnecessary and your typical emotional manipulation from Disney and the twist at the end was another one of those by now typical Disney villain twists previously done much better in ‘Frozen’ and ‘Wreck-It Ralph’.

It may seem that I am trashing and hating on Big Hero 6 but I am not. The story is not bad, it is perfectly serviceable. It is the execution that is far from great. As for its characters, the main ones are great and the supporting ones are quite mediocre so let’s first talk about the good ones.

………………………………………………….

Big Hero 6 Movie Review

………………………………………………….

Hiro Hamada is excellent. What I liked about him the most is how he wanted to kill the villain for killing his brother. He had a moment of darkness in him which was excellent and realistic. He is a typical teenage modern geek, but at least he is very well portrayed, complex and quite likable.

Tadashi was so likable and even though I really disliked his death and how it was handled, at least he is a very strong brother character and the two share an awesome relationship. We got a strong brotherly bond for once without any petty arguments and fights which was fantastic.

Baymax is easily the heart and soul of the film and, needless to say, the standout character and overall aspect of the entire movie. His big marshmallow design is actually very original for a robot and I also really liked his fighting costume. He helped Hiro deal with all of his problems so wonderfully and all of their scenes were wonderful to behold. He is one of the best movie robots recently and maybe even of all time.

………………………………………………….

Big Hero 6 Movie Review

………………………………………………….

But now we come to the supporting players and they are all very weak. Again that stems from rushed and frenetic pacing as they had no time to be properly developed. They were fun as a team, but individually each one of them was underutilized.

Fred is the best of the bunch, but still a typical geek and hippie. GoGo is an awfully annoying, overly strong feminist character and Honey Lemon is likable, but too girly in my opinion. As for Wasabi, he is easily the most underdeveloped character in the movie and basically a token black character for the team. Krei was forgettable and Professor Callaghan’s reason for becoming a villain was fine, but he also was underutilized severely. He looked cool and had some great action scenes, but the twist reveal was disappointing. Aunt Cass, on the other hand, is very likable and endearing and I loved the portrayal of aunts as great, lovely parents.

………………………………………………….

Big Hero 6 Movie Review

………………………………………………….

Big Hero 6 is very well animated. The animation here is frequently exceptional and quite gorgeous. I loved the imagery and the flight sequences were the most beautiful for sure. The film is very modern as it revolves entirely in a giant city and the animation delivers as the city looks great with an excellent attention to detail and a great use of a darker color palette. The character design is also pretty strong and good across the board.

Now this film is Disney’s third attempt at basically making an anime film. I would say that it is obviously an improvement over ‘Atlantis’ and quite on par with ‘Treasure Planet’. But still they dropped a giant ball once again and did not deliver on the promise of a great superhero anime film.

San Fransokyo looks cool and I loved the mix of American and Asian in character design and aesthetics of the entire city. The mix was fine and definitely somewhat different for the studio, but still the characterization and the humor are never as strong as in anime counterparts.

………………………………………………….

Big Hero 6 Movie Review

………………………………………………….

I found the dialogue to be solid, but the humor is not all that great and was rather repetitive at times. The direction is weak and the film’s runtime is awfully short and this story needed two hours and not just an hour and a half. That is why the entire thing is so damn rushed in execution. The action sequences are actually very well executed, entertaining and quite clever at times and that is why it did not bother me too much that the movie was heavy in terms of action. The voice acting is excellent and the film is mostly well made with obvious care, but it still ended up being one of Disney’s weaker films.

Big Hero 6 has frequently gorgeous animation, very good voice acting, strong character design and imagery and actually stupendously executed action sequences. It also has a big heart at its core with a couple of highly emotional sequences. Hiro Hamada is a very strong protagonist and Baymax steals the show as the highlight of the film. However, all of the other supporting characters are almost entirely underutilized and underdeveloped, the film’s overall story with the tragedy, the twist and the origin story is very unoriginal and the film is just terribly rushed and abrupt in its execution. All of those problems stem from overly short runtime and thus this is by far the worst Disney Revival film.

My Rating – 3.5
