Worms Armageddon is a 1999 artillery turn-based tactics video game developed by Team17 for PC. It is an iconic strategy game in my opinion.

First off, Worms Armageddon is one of my absolute childhood favorites. I played the game countless times as a child and I have to say that it stood the test of time gloriously for me as I still do love it to pieces. It’s just such a fun game that never ceases to entertain me.

The player controls the team of up to eight worms against either artificial intelligence or another real-life player. You have weapons on your disposal which are a great mix of cartoony and realistic. Let’s first say that obviously the standout is playing with a real person as the computer player is just never as great or as capable and definitely not as smart as a real person can be.

But I did love the Deathmatch mode regardless as you only have a couple of worms against ten or such opposing worms in those immensely difficult last couple of stages which took me quite a while to beat. The same should be said for the missions which are honestly highly entertaining and very well imagined as the levels are a perfect mix of clever planning and pure-out action.

And yes, I do consider this game to be a strategy game, obviously a turn-based one. It does require a lot of careful planning on the behalf of the player when it comes to both strategy and weapon usage. But it also features quite a lot of action in it as you need to be very capable and fast to use things like rope for instance. And that mix of action and planning led to such a diverse experience.

Worms Armageddon’s standout aspect is the weaponry without any doubt. They are so well utilized and you can literally make use of either one of them depending on the situation making the game rather sophisticated and even realistic at times. Bazooka and hand grenade are rather difficult to use and the computer excels at those, but I personally love the most using rope, guns, sheep and of course the high-distance weapons.

The game looks very appealing as the animation is particularly strong in it. It isn’t particularly inventive in the designs and that’s one of its weaknesses as the level designs should have been much better with the fields themselves not offering a lot of diversity. But the worms themselves are rather cute and endearing and the game looks very modern for its time.

The score is also good and the sound design is particularly realistic and effective. I loved the customization part of the game as it offers you a variety of customizable worms, nations, graves, sounds and of course the option of making your own battlefield.

The controls are also terrific as the game is accessible to all players and rather easy to get into fast. I definitely wanted more options in terms of gameplay as the game is rather short to finish off in its entirety in all the modes. That was certainly the biggest problem the game never overcame, but it hooked me in so fast that I wanted to play it every single day at least once.

Worms Armageddon needed more variety and a more difficult A.I. for sure. But other than those flaws, this strategy game is pretty much phenomenal and highly entertaining to this day. It looks and sounds great, it is terrific to play in all its modes and I particularly loved its weaponry and how well all weapons are utilized.

My Rating – 4.3
