Slither is a 2006 science fiction horror comedy film directed by James Gunn and starring Elizabeth Banks and Nathan Fillion. It’s such a solid, very entertaining flick.

Slither Movie Review

Slither follows a town attacked by an alien worm parasite which enters people’s brains and takes entire control of their bodies. Now obviously this plot is entirely unoriginal as it mixes a lot of previous horror films into its story, but the mix mostly does work and the most important thing is that the movie is a lot of fun to watch and it’s over faster than you can realize.

The biggest reason why the film works lies in the comedy department. The science fiction angle is pretty uninspired and although the horror angle works because of our primal fear of parasitic worms and some scenes are effective, it is mostly a film that is just disgusting instead of truly scary. But the humor is so good and actually clever as it riffs on some cliched horror dialogue in such a hilarious fashion. Some lines of dialogue here definitely made me laugh.

The characters are okay, but nothing remarkable. The main romance I definitely liked and the use of the wonderful song Every Woman in the World by Air Supply fitted the movie so well and made it even better. Michael Rooker definitely gave a pretty good performance and Nathan Fillion is also serviceable, but Elizabeth Banks actually stole the show here as the most interesting and most badass character.

Slither Movie Review

Slither is well paced and consistently entertaining. The direction from James Gunn is pretty good and the humor is great why is why he was approached by Marvel to direct ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ in the first place. The dialogue is particularly strong. But still I found the movie way too gory and disgusting personally and most of the action/horror scenes are far from great. The ending is also not particularly good, although I did like how they made fun of the characters’ various plans to destroy the creature by literally stopping them right in their track. The film is very original in all such scenes.

Slither is uninspired in its science fiction elements and although some scenes are effective and they play on our primal fear of parasitic worms very well, the film mostly favors gore over actual scares and is too disgusting at times. However, the reason why this film works is because of its humor which is absolutely terrific as the film makes fun of various horror clichés in both character action and script with a fair share of very funny lines of dialogue. It’s a very entertaining flick well directed by James Gunn plus Elizabeth Banks is quite memorable here.

My Rating – 3.5
