Rock-a-Bye Baby

Rock-a-Bye Baby Review

Rock-a-Bye Baby is a 1962 animated short film from the Woody Woodpecker series. It is a pretty solid cartoon.

It’s alligator hibernation season in the Everglades, but Gabby Gator is wide awake and eager to have Woody for dinner. This movie worked for me because I like Gabby Gator quite a bit. I find him to be an underrated Woody antagonist. The dynamic between the two is as fun as ever in this one. The animation and score are also quite good. The voice acting was excellent too.

My problem here lies in the overall premise. It’s quite odd. Woody sings a lullaby song to the gator. He falls asleep and can’t proceed to eat him. This situation is repeated ad nauseam and most of those scenarios were only serviceable. The movie worked because of the two great characters and their fun dynamic, but that premise was way too weak to support an entire short.

Rock-a-Bye Baby has a weak premise and repetitive scenes, but at least the energy was there and the two characters are great together.

My Rating – 3.5
