Asterix and Obelix: The Big Fight Review

Asterix and Obelix: The Big Fight is a French animated comedy miniseries that premiered on Netflix in 2025. It was a solid, but very disappointing adaptation.

Getafix loses his sanity while the Gauls prepare to face the Romans in this famous story that was adapted from one of the best comics in the series. It was already adapted into film back in 1989 and I have to say that that one was much better than what we got here. I was all for a Netflix Asterix show, but it really needed to have been much better.

Technically, it’s a very strong series. The voice acting is good, the pacing was fine and the animation was surprisingly solid. It lacked the colorful palette of the aforementioned film, but at least it was polished and aesthetically pleasing. But I hated the score that was overly modern and just plain annoying.

And that is the main issue that I’ve had with this adaptation – it tried to be too hip and cool in order to please potential new fans in today’s kids. That was the clear intention here, which is fine, but this was clearly not made for us older fans. It simply lacked the sophisticated dialogue and humor that defined the original comic.

The Big Fight has strong character arcs for both Asterix and Obelix. They shared a wonderful friendship here and were the standouts of the cast. The others weren’t as well realized and most did not get much to do sadly.

There is this first episode of this five-episode miniseries that was actually my favorite of the bunch. That one adapted another comic – ‘How Obelix Fell into the Magic Potion When He Was a Little Kid’. This was a lovely idea that worked and I really liked this origin story, though the added trauma porn elements were excessive. The rest of the show could not compete with that interesting opening episode.

Asterix and Obelix: The Big Fight has an interesting first episode that is a solid origin story for Obelix, but the rest of this miniseries is a mixed bag. The animation is great, but the score is way too modern. I appreciated the voice acting and characterization, but missing were the sophisticated humor and dialogue that defined the source material.

Worst Episode: Episode IV.

Best Episode: Episode I.

My Rating – 3.5
