Is This Goodbye, Charlie Brown? is a 1983 animated television special and the 24th entry in the Peanuts series. It is a great, stupendous entry.

I just loved this special and it is easily one of the best ever Peanuts specials. Such a great return to form for the series. Linus and Lucy are moving away and Charlie has to say goodbye. Now, of course this isn’t perfect as Charlie Brown is easily the least interesting character here and some may find fault with that ending. And although I agree that it lessened the impact of all that poignant drama before, I still understand that choice and the series would really feel empty without these two characters going forward.

Watching Charlie cope with his friend going away is heartbreaking and Linus is also really sweet here. I loved Lucy as well, but especially what her leave meant for Schroeder as he finally realized that he likes her in such a sweet, unexpected moment. Sally is as hilarious as she can be, Snoopy is also pretty funny in those couple of scenes he’s in and Peppermint Patty is easily the highlight as she is so into Charlie or Chuck as she calls him, but manages to manipulate the situation and making it as if Charlie himself asked her on a date. That was hilarious.

The entire special is not only funny, but emotional in the best way possible and it uses its characters remarkably well making it a standout special in the process.

My Rating – 4.3
