Hare Ribbin’ (1944)
Hare Ribbin’ Review
Hare Ribbin’ is a 1944 animated short film from the Merry Melodies series. It is a very good short.
A Russian dog is chasing a rabbit whom he wants to cook for dinner, but Bugs of course humiliates him and the action is taken underwater where he first seduces him, then evades being eaten and eventually kills the dog in what truly is an unprecedentedly dark ending. The animation could have been better and some scenes are better than others, but for the most part this is a very strong entry.
I particularly liked that dog who is quite memorable. The underwater scenes steal the show with the mermaid part being excellent and the dinner scene being so well done. Almost nothing here is new when it comes to the type of its content, but at least it’s so well done, undeniably so, that I didn’t mind that at all. And the pace is good and the movie is quite fun.
Hare Ribbin’ has its problems, but the action and humor are so good and the dinner and mermaid scenes steal the show.
