The Flintstones Season 6 Review

The sixth season of The Flintstones is uneven as usual, but still such a major improvement over the previous season that I was pleasantly surprised.

So you learned your lesson, didn’t you, Dumb-Dumb?

The Flintstones Season 6 Review………………………………………………………

No Biz Like Show Biz finds Fred wanting to cash in on Bamm-Bamm and Pebbles’ singing talents and this is the first time that we get to know that the two can actually sing really well. The song itself is quite solid, but the overall plot felt too silly and a typical baby episode. The House That Fred Built is to me one of the classics! It is an amazing episode where Fred builds a house for Wilma’s mother so that she won’t stay with them. An excellent premise so perfectly realized with a great comedic ending. It is consistently entertaining and funny.

The Return of Stony Curtis is one of the few celebrity/Hollywood episodes that are actually really good. Tony Curtis himself lent the voice which was great and authentic, but him becoming Fred’s slave did prove to be a winning premise for a fun episode. Disorder in the Court is another quite good episode which perfectly makes use of Fred’s paranoia with amusing results.

Circus Business is such a forgettable episode that I do not even remember it particularly well. Samantha is such a great episode which surprised me as it has magic in it which was weird for The Flintstones to have. However, they used it so well here in an episode that is fun and funny from start to finish and it is one of the most impressive girl power episodes in this show.

The Great Gazoo is such a great introduction to the titular character whom I really like. He really brought a fresh change in pace for the season and helped it a lot. This episode was a typical hijinks episode, but done really well. Rip Van Flintstone is a rehashed episode as we’ve seen Fred dream up a future before. Very lazy.

The Gravelberry Pie King has a winning premise, but the execution is quite weak leading to a disappointing episode. The Stonefinger Caper is another one of those boring, rehashed gangster plots that just do not work.

The Masquerade Party is a typical part where Fred and Barney get into tough situations for misunderstanding. Forgettable and uninspired. Shinrock A Go-Go is another one of those musical episodes, but is better than most thanks to such a memorable role from Fred.

Royal Rubble is somewhat racist, but watching it in the context of its time period, it is an excellent episode that focused heavily on a new setting producing some wonderful results. It is one of the most memorable parts for Barney. Seeing Doubles is such a traditional Flintstones story with an excellent use of Gazoo and fantastic Fred and Barney. Very entertaining.

How to Pick a Fight with Your Wife Without Really Trying is one of the episodes that solidified how strong Fred’s love for Wilma is and how strong their marriage is as a whole. Such a beautifully romantic and yet also funny episode. Fred Goes Ape was a bit too silly and fantastical to me with its titular premise and although definitely fun at times, it was a bit too excessive in those elements.

The Long, Long, Long Weekend is of course one of the best episodes of the season and one of the most purely enjoyable and original Flintstones stories ever. Fred and the gang go to the 21st century and watching them in the future done Jetsons style was such a wonderful experience, very well done with a great attention to detail and excellent animation. Two Men on a Dinosaur is good as a life lesson for the boys, but overall not the greatest owing to once again those boring gangster elements.

In The Treasure of Sierra Madrock we see one of the best ever roles for Wilma and Betty as surely the girls were the absolute heroes here. And watching Fred and Barney get tricked into thinking the rocks are treasure was definitely funny. Curtain Call at Bedrock is such a good theatre episode where Fred, in a great role, secretly wants to play the part of Romeo. The humor with Barney in drag near the end was great as well.

Boss for a Day is such a classic. I loved the message of this story. Fred learns thanks to The Great Gazoo that even his boss has a boss and that everyone has someone who orders them around and that his position is actually better than that of his boss’s in a way. A very well told and meaningful story. Fred’s Island is quite the opposite – a very weak use of Mr. Slate this time around and a plot that is more racist and odd than enjoyable.

Jealousy is absolutely terrific. When you have Wilma’s friend/ex come to town to make Fred jealous, you are bound to get a great and funny Flintstones experience and that is exactly what happened here. And on the opposite side of the spectrum, Dripper is one of the most forgettable episodes of this season.

My Fair Freddy has its moments, but is overall too rehashed and repetitive. As for The Story of Rocky’s Raiders, let’s just say that it is a very mediocre history storyline and such an odd and disappointing way to end the season.

But overall, this season is such an improvement over its predecessor. It does have its very mediocre parts, but it has more than enough amazing and even classic episodes and it is the season that was refreshing as The Great Gazoo really brought a lot of exciting opportunities and the creators managed to make use of them wonderfully. The use of fantasy and science fiction elements was somewhat not fitting, but they mostly used them so well that they actually helped the season a lot. Such a good last season and I am so sad that I’ve finished watching the entire series now, but at least it ended on such a high note.
