Doctor Who Season 2 Review

The second season of Doctor Who is an improvement over the previous season with better crafted, more interesting serials.

………………………………………………….

I shall miss them. Silly old fusspots

Doctor Who Season 2 Review

………………………………………………….

I actually liked Planet of Giants despite its quite mediocre reception. As the critics have pinpointed, visually it is very good, especially for its time and budget. I liked the setting and how well it was utilized. ‘The Incredible Shrinking Man’ looked better but that was a Hollywood film and this is a British series. Barbara was surprisingly weak here, but I really liked those two shady murderers and their subplot was quite interesting and well juxtapositioned with the TARDIS crew.

The Dalek Invasion of Earth is actually a bit overrated, quite the opposite from the previous underrated serial. I continue to not care for these robotic villains as they seem foolish to me. Here they should be villainous and creepy but they just aren’t. The serial, per usual, started intriguingly with the first episode, but then it quickly was relegated to your typical post-apocalyptic fare.

The last episode is famous for giving us the departure of Susan, the very first departure in the show and it was actually quite well executed in that it made me sad for a second even when I have never cared for the character. A really well done, memorable departure, but not the best of the season for sure.

Doctor Who Season 2 Review

………………………………………………….

The Rescue should have been better given the premise, but the first episode was awesome and intriguing and the entire serial benefits from an interesting storyline and characters. Especially the atmosphere is striking here and it carries it to the next level. This serial is famous for replacing Susan with Vicki who serves a similar purpose to Susan but is infinitely better as a more likable, more admirable and stronger female character who’s quite spunky, energetic and fun.

The Romans is a different than usual historical period serial because it is much more fun and casual in its approach and execution which I actually really liked. It still has all of the pitfalls of these serials such as a slower pace and some episodes are much more interesting than others, but the humor carries it through and Ian and Barbara in particular are so wonderful here in their great, fun dynamic and with some hilarious lines of dialogue. The ending is quite striking too.

Doctor Who Season 2 Review

………………………………………………….

The Web Planet featured a terrific, intriguing and visually arresting and creepy first episode, but everything afterwards went downhill and it just never recovered. This is easily the worst serial of this second season because I just could not take those Menoptra creatures seriously as they were obviously humans in costumes and here the budget definitely held the story back hugely. The action was particularly silly and stupid. The most dated Doctor Who serial for sure.

The Crusade has a couple of interesting scenes and especially good dialogue and some good characters. It is solid as historical serials go, but it is not a particularly strong and memorable serial. I, however, cannot judge it properly as two of its four episodes are missing. Thankfully, this is the only incomplete serial this time around.

The Space Museum is a particularly original and authentic in premise serial. Really interesting and memorable. But the execution wasn’t the best. I loved it at first, but then it ventured into more boring stuff and the Daleks were present here and they did not need to be in this serial in my opinion.

………………………………………………….

Doctor Who Season 2 Review

………………………………………………….

The Chase is not the greatest serial because it is overly rushed and frenetic in pacing with too much action in it. Some episodes are cheesy and others are boring. And as I said, some are too frenetic. But still the story is solid and actually very important for the show.

Yes, Barbara and Ian departed in the last episode of this serial and I was just amazed by their departure. It would be hard to top this departure, but let’s see. I loved seeing them having a fun time back in London in 1965. It was just so incredibly sad to see them go as I loved their characters and dynamic, but it was all the more sad seeing the Doctor and just how brutally he was hit by their departure. He will miss them and he did change during these two seasons. A great character arc and I loved that final scene, the best thing the series did so far.

………………………………………………….

Doctor Who Season 2 Review

………………………………………………….

The Time Meddler is one of the best serials here for sure. Steven is introduced as the new male addition to the team and he is just not Ian. He is solid and will do, but he is far from great or memorable. This story is set in 1066 but is not concerned with history all too much. Instead it gives us the first ever Time Lord apart from the Doctor and The Monk truly is such a fascinating character, extremely memorable and the scenes between the two were just a lot of fun with great dialogue. An excellent twist and a very important serial for the entire show with the best cinematography so far.

Overall, this is a solid season which has some very important episodes in terms of story developments and departures. Some serials are weak, but others are actually very good. Overall, it most certainly is better than the first season.

Worst Serials: The Dalek Invasion of Earth and The Web Planet.

Best Serials: The Romans and The Time Meddler.

Worst Episodes: Escape to Danger, Crater of Needles and Invasion.

Best Episodes: Flashpoint, The Powerful Enemy, The Planet of Decision, The Watcher and Checkmate.

Buddy’s Adventures (1934)

Buddy's Adventures ReviewBuddy’s Adventures Review

Buddy’s Adventures is a 1934 animated short film from the Looney Tunes series. It is a very good, original short.

Buddy and Cookie somehow visit a land where music is forbidden. Without going into too much detail, that is the plot of this Looney Tunes entry and it is so authentic and interesting. It so obviously influenced ‘Yellow Submarine’ and I don’t know why not many people realize that. I loved the beginning which reminded me of Oz and the ending with that spanking scene was very risqué and simply hilarious.

Buddy’s Adventures is still far from great as this is the type of story that would have benefited from the use of color so they should have waited to tell it that way. The pacing is so wrong and frenetic as the film should have been at least two minutes longer. But it is populated with fun characters and such entertaining action on screen that it definitely is one of the best that Buddy has to offer.

So original in plot and a lot of fun, though too frenetic, Buddy’s Adventures is one of the best Buddy outings for sure.

Escape from the Planet of the Apes (1971)

Escape from the Planet of the Apes Movie Review

……………………………………………………….

Escape from the Planet of the Apes Movie Review

Escape from the Planet of the Apes is a 1971 science fiction film directed by Don Taylor and starring Roddy McDowall and Kim Hunter. It’s a good sequel.

……………………………………………………….

Because I loathe bananas!

……………………………………………………….

Escape from the Planet of the Apes Movie Review

……………………………………………………….
After the events of ‘Beneath the Planet of the Apes’, Zira, Cornelius and Dr. Milo board the spaceship and fly off from the dying Earth, enter a time vortex and end up in the year 1973. The film basically follows the relationship between humans and apes as they examine and question them about the future of the humanity.
This is a good story, but it is also a story that demanded the least amount of special effects as we basically have just three apes here and that’s it. No fantastic occurencies or action scenes whatsoever. That is why the critics loved it so much along with its thematic resonance, but to me that is exactly why the previous film was more entertaining.

……………………………………………………….

Escape from the Planet of the Apes Movie Review

……………………………………………………….
But this is still a pretty good film, although far from my favorites in the series. Government intrusion and especially the experimentation on animals are well explored. I liked its character-driven, slower approach and to me the film dealt pretty realistically with such a situation. The highlights were the first act and especially the scene where the humans realize that the apes can talk and are extremely smart and the ending which is emotional and features such a pleasant, yet again unexpected twist as this franchise usually so wonderfully does.
To me those doctors who befriend the apes are fine and likable, but none of them are memorable and this is just a showcase for the characters of Zira and Cornelius as Dr. Milo dies pretty quickly. Cornelius is fine, but Zira is much better developed and although sometimes annoying, she is still a very sympathetic, charming person whom I liked quite a bit in this movie. The acting was also pretty satisfactory, certainly better than in the previous flick.
Escape from the Planet of the Apes is technically very well made as the filmmakers this time around didn’t have to deal with the whole lot of effects as in the previous flicks. The pacing is fine and the film is engaging from start to finish. I liked its scientific and political discussions and the film seemed grounded in reality and rarely over-the-top.

……………………………………………………….

Escape from the Planet of the Apes Movie Review

……………………………………………………….
The major problem is its humor which is very problematic at times and sometimes bordering on the campy territory. And there is one scene that absolutely infuriated me. That is the scene where the two explain how apes rebelled against humans. In ‘Planet of the Apes’ it is stated that the apes do not know about their origin and history and this movie now states that they do. That was obviously a major inconsistency that disrespected one of the biggest focal points from the original just for the sake of setup for the next two movies, I believe. Very disappointing. But at least the film is otherwise devoid of plot inconsistencies and plot holes.

I can see why the critics love Escape from the Planet of the Apes as it is rich in themes and pleasantly slow paced and more character-driven, but to me it was safer that way and less entertaining which is why I liked the previous movie more. The humor is also hit-or-miss. But the film is still very well scripted, Zira is very well utilized here and there are many great scenes such as that wonderful ending leading to a pretty satisfactory sequel in the end.

Ranking Peanuts Films

Ranking Peanuts Films

The Peanuts gang has gotten five feature treatments thus far. Four of them were released from 1969 to 1980 and the last one was released recently in 2015. The prospects for another feature-length Peanuts adventure are pretty low unfortunately, but at least we’ve got five films, most of which are actually very good and some even rivaling the specials themselves. So without further ado here is my ranking of all five of these charming flicks.

Bon Voyage, Charlie Brown (and Don't Come Back!!) Movie Review5. Bon Voyage, Charlie Brown (and Don’t Come Back!!)

This is the only Peanuts film that frankly disappointed me a bit. It still has its excellent moments such as every scene with Peppermint Patty who steals the show here and surprisingly Snoopy who is very amusing, but there isn’t enough adventurous and comedic elements here and the cast of characters is reduced significantly. It is still a solid film, but the weakest of the five and thus it takes the last spot.

Race for Your Life, Charlie Brown Movie Review4. Race for Your Life, Charlie Brown

This is the one entry here that is admittedly very slight and surely enough the plot is very weak and almost non-existent, but the Peanuts gang is charming enough here that I liked it quite a bit nevertheless. I mostly liked its adventurous tone as this adventure in the woods and through rafting provided many wonderful moments for all of the characters and I loved their group dynamic.

Snoopy, Come Home Movie Review3. Snoopy, Come Home

Snoopy, Come Home is the best early sequel for a lot of reasons. One is that Snoopy has rarely been this good. Yes, this definitely is one of his defining stories as he is simply wonderful. Another reason is the pure emotional and dramatic heft of the story which is felt from beginning to the end. There are certainly not enough comedic elements here, but in terms of drama, it succeeds tremendously and provides a couple of heartbreaking scenes.

The Peanuts Movie

2. The Peanuts Movie

The most recent Peanuts entry is the best thing that Blue Sky Studios has ever done, bar none. The plot is basically taken from the special ‘You’re in Love, Charlie Brown’ and Snoopy’s subplot is sometimes too much like a detour. However, the animation is probably the best CGI animation I have ever seen – fittingly old-fashioned, yet still modern. Almost all of the characters get their moment to shine and the ending is just beautiful. Against all odds, this recent installment ended up being the series’ second best.

A Boy Named Charlie Brown Movie Review1. A Boy Named Charlie Brown

The original has to be number one. There is no discussion to be had here whatsoever. All of the characters are terrific, the storyline is phenomenal and as smart as anything the specials have ever done and this is probably the finest examination of Charlie Brown’s character so far. The songs are solid and the humor is terrific. But the reason why this is not only the best Peanuts film, but also one of the better animated films ever made lies in its ending which teaches children that it is okay to lose as long as you continue trying in such a beautiful, heart-warming and simply outstanding sequence between Charlie Brown and Linus.

Elfen Lied (2004)

Elfen Lied Review

………………………………………………….

Elfen Lied Review

Elfen Lied is a 2004 science fiction thriller anime series directed by Mamoru Kanbe. I liked this anime despite its many deficiencies.

………………………………………………….

I envy you just for having someone who’s worried about you

………………………………………………….

Elfen Lied Review

………………………………………………….

The plot is pretty good and I liked both its setting and the conflicts. It revolves around the interactions and differences between human beings and the Diclonii, a mutant species similar to humans in build but distinguishable by two horns on their heads and so-called vectors which are transparent telekinetically controlled arms that have the power to manipulate and cut objects within their reach. I disagree with the notion that Elfen Lief is a horror show, to me it has some of those elements, but it is mostly a sci-fi thriller with definite romance elements here and there.
Speaking of horror, I totally disliked the use of gore here. Not only do I dislike violence in movies and shows and here it was overly abundant, but it was also done in a totally unrealistic manner with awful blood animation and effects. The blood here looks simply ridiculous. As for the nudity, sometimes it was funny or needed, but for the most time the series relied too heavily on satisfying the heterosexual male viewers and those moe elements were also way too emphasized.
Lucy is one of the character highlights and her split personality Nyu is of course quite sweet. Kouta is a bit forgettable, but the relationship between the two is amazing and easily the emotional core of the show. Some of their scenes were quite romantic and their flashbacks were stupendously good. I rarely like flashbacks, but Elfen Lied found a surprisingly good use of it.

………………………………………………….

Elfen Lied Review

………………………………………………….
Yyka is too typical as this jealous love interest, but Mayu is wonderful and the most sympathetic character for sure. Nana is also easy to root for and these two got some wonderful scenes together. Mariko was fine, albeit underutilized. And all of those doctors and military personnel were also underutilized as antagonists.
Elfen Lied’s animation is pretty good for its time, discounting of course the previously mentioned horrible gore effects. I loved the seaside setting and I adored Kouta’s house. It was quite cozy and charming. Those vectors were also really well animated. As for the action, it is good, but underwhelming in its quantity. I expected more fight scenes than just the handful that we got.
Obviously the pink hair color is fitting for the Diclonii as their qualities are shy, naive and inexperienced, but I still disliked the show’s tendency to basically only have female Diclonii. This anime is made for the teen males way too much. But I still liked the conflicts here and I liked the show’s themes of discrimination and racism. I wanted more examination of that, but what we got was still quite sophisticated and the roots of crime in particular are well established as it showcases how the individuals prone to become violent were mostly the victims of violence themselves during childhood.

………………………………………………….

Elfen Lied Review

………………………………………………….
I liked its opening theme a lot – very moody and interestingly using Latin language. As for the show’s romance and drama elements, they were fine, but too often than not, the characters met in way too unbelievable set of circumstances and some episodes had plot holes. I also thought that the show suffered from short length and too small set of characters as the story needed more.

In the end, Elfen Lied is overly violent, typically sexualized and sometimes filled with plot holes and underutilized, but the romance and drama elements are solid, the flahbacks are very good, the story is interesting, the themes are well explored and the finale in particular is very emotional. It is a pretty good anime, but it could have been much better regardless.

Worst Episodes: A Chance Encounter and Attack.
Best Episodes: Confrontation and No Return.

Batman Arkham City (2011)

Batman Arkham City Review

………………………………………………….

Batman Arkham City Review

Batman Arkham City is a 2011 action-adventure video game developed by Rocksteady Studios. It is the second installment in the Batman Arkham series.

………………………………………………….

Nice of you to join us, Oracle

………………………………………………….

Batman Arkham City Review

………………………………………………….
I really liked this game and although I thought ‘Batman Arkham Asylum’ was slightly better as a whole, I still enjoyed this second entry a lot and it is a worthy successor to a great original. Now the plot is probably better this time around. It is well crafted and rich in themes and characters. I liked it quite a bit and the series continues its streak of strong writing, solid dialogue and excellent voice performances. The acting is truly terrific here, at least for video game standards. The same goes for the dialogue and also the humor as sometimes it could be quite funny with snarky one-liners from Bats being the highlights.
But let’s talk about the gameplay. Batman Arkham City is once again an action-adventure game that relies strongly on action, but it still follows a plot and has well developed characters. It also features stealth elements which were once again the major highlights to this player. Whenever I had to take down an entire army of brutes, I was having a blast and truly some of those levels were so intriguingly constructed with excellent designs and much smarter A.I. this time around.

………………………………………………….

Batman Arkham City Review

………………………………………………….
I also loved the combat. Yes, Batman is probably too strong here, but that is the point as, I agree with the critics, it almost makes you feel like Batman yourself and that is the point of playing video games, especially the superhero ones. I felt like a caped crusader and I definitely felt that I had power and that I could win in every situation.
The villains are again weaker as some of the boss fights such as Freeze were quite interesting in the tactics that you had to employ and really clever when you think about them, but others like Penguin and Hugo Strange were incredibly weak and disappointing. Them not fighting at all, but just waiting behind their guards was so unfortunate.
And that brings me to my next point – the overabundance of characters. Yes, there are just too many characters in Arkham City and most especially villains that all of them did not get as much to do as they deserved. That was certainly a problem although I still liked each one of them. Joker is as great as before and I liked how Alfred was utilized in a funny manner. Penguin was good, Strange is okay but weak in the end and of course Ra’s al Ghul is a memorable character and those levels were some of the most creative of the entire game. I also really liked the side quests with Catwoman who possessed some pretty interesting combat moves.

………………………………………………….

Batman Arkham City Review

………………………………………………….
Batman Arkham City features a solid score, good direction and it is pretty well paced. I loved almost all of the levels, fights and especially the designs of the stealth levels which were frequently even brilliant. All of the newly added gadgets were beautifully utilized and they helped add a lot of refreshing gameplay abilites to the game. Te world building is strong and crusing Arkham City was certainly a lot of fun. I like that it has side quests and that you can play it after you have finished the main story, but that main campaign still remains incredibly short and that was frustating.

In the end, I really liked Batman Arkham City despite it being filled with too many characters and being short in length. But those characters are well developed, the game is visually terrific, the plot is good and the gameplay is once again fantastic as it makes you think at times with its clever level designs plus being in Batman’s shoes was just a lot of fun from start to finish.

Cannibal Capers (1930)

Cannibal Capers Review

Cannibal Capers Review

Cannibal Capers is a 1930 Disney animated short film. It is a pretty good early Silly Symphony.

I have to admit that I really liked this entry even though it is a somewhat typical early 30s Silly Symphony. It has again way too much dancing in it and the character designs are expectedly unappealing and not cute at all, but the film is otherwise very entertaining and well scored and with a couple of good gags.

Having a cartoon revolve around cannibals was a brave choice and the third act with the lion is certainly the highlight. It features memorable action, a couple of very good gags and a great cartoon feel to it. I loved the ending as it was a memorable and fun way to conclude the short. So the first act is lacking and too slow but others are very good leading to what is arguably one of the best Silly Symphonies of its period.

Cannibal Capers is weakly animated, but a lot of fun with some good scenes and gags.

About Schmidt (2002)

About Schmidt Review

……………………………………………………….

About Schmidt Movie Review

About Schmidt is a 2002 comedy drama film directed by Alexander Payne and starring Jack Nicholson and Kathy Bates. It is such a good, stupendous dramedy.

……………………………………………………….

You’ve got to appreciate what you have while you still have it

……………………………………………………….

About Schmidt Review

……………………………………………………….

This film surprised me with its quality. Yes, the first half is a bit conventional and it featured too much narration. The narration is fine and well done here, but I dislike that style as a whole personally. But it was still pretty good with some great scenes. But the second half is where the movie becomes great whereas it was just good previously. It is a great character study, but also very funny, highly emotional and with a couple of powerful scenes. The ending alone is just beautiful to witness.

I loved the characters here, so colorful. Warren is such a likable character and it was great to finally see Jack playing a sympathetic character for once. He is the heart and soul of this movie. But Jeannie is also good and I liked their relationship and of course Roberta is hilarious and quite unforgettable.

……………………………………………………….

About Schmidt Review

……………………………………………………….

The acting is top-notch. Unfortunately June Squibb didn’t get much to do here, but Hope Davis is pretty good and of course Kathy Bates is so strong in her crazy and hilarious role. But this is Jack Nicholson’s vehicle and he absolutely shines in this movie, delivering quite possibly the best performance of his career. He plays a different character than usual, he is understated, the facial expressions that he gives are comedy gold and he sold those emotional sequences majestically.

About Schmidt is a dramedy and it is one of the rare instances of it that you cannot really pinpoint its stronger emphasis as it is comedic and dramatic in just the right amount. Kathy Bates made me laugh out loud, but Jack’s facial expressions are genius and the movie was the funniest in those more subtle and realistic moments.

It is still a strong, relatable, realistic and emotional drama and I loved all of its aspects from the protagonist’s relationship with his daughter to the death of his wife to him helping an African kid. All of those themes were beautifully examined and powerful, culminating in a truly wonderful ending.

……………………………………………………….

About Schmidt Review

……………………………………………………….

About Schmidt is quite well edited and paced as it is never dull. The story was always interesting despite the first act not being the greatest. I absolutely adored its series of vignettes in its road trip, quite charming and quirky, especially the scene in the trailer. The film sometimes shifted in its tone abruptly, but it was for the most part quite polished in its shifts from drama to comedy and vice versa. The movie is weird, but mostly pleasantly so. The humor is outstanding and rarely have I seen a film that is both truly funny and truly heartwarming and dramatic. Another one of the highlights most certainly has to be that meteor scene which was just gorgeous and simply indescribable. To me About Schmidt succeeds as a series of vignettes much more so than a polished movie as a whole, but most of those scenes are so great that it is worth taking this crazy trip. I continue to have love-hate relationship with Alexander Payne, but I am happy to say that this is the only film I liked from him after ‘Nebraska’.

About Schmidt has a somewhat inferior first half and sometimes the tonal shifts aren’t the most skillful, but this is mostly a great film which is equally funny and heartwarming with some scenes that are absolutely hilarious and some that are emotional and simply beautiful. The characters are colorful, the script is very strong, it deals with a lot of important issues, it succeeds as a series of crazy vignettes and it features possibly the finest performance in Jack Nicholson’s career.

My Rating – 4.5

The Penalty (1920)

The Penalty Movie Review………………………………………………………

The Penalty Movie Review

The Penalty is a 1920 silent crime film directed by Wallace Worsley and starring always great Lon Chaney. It is a very good, entertaining movie.

……………………………………………………..

Everything comes to him who waits

………………………………………………………

The Penalty Movie Review………………………………………………………

It follows a man played by Chaney who got his legs mistakenly amputated as a kid and now seeks revenge on the doctor who ruined his life. This is an obvious Chaney vehicle and he absolutely killed it in this role. The film itself isn’t one of his very best and ‘The Unknown’ is certainly much better, but it is one of his best performances as he is so great here.

His character is complex and villainous and creepy and crazy but also with a touch of sentiment and sympathy. He had to hit all of those notes and he did it masterfully, not to mention that he was torturing himself physically in order to play a legless man. Such an admirable devotion from one of the greatest actors who ever lived. The other actors here are much weaker in comparison to him.

………………………………………………………

The Penalty Movie Review………………………………………………………

The plot is interesting and The Penalty is basically an early all-out crime film and I honestly liked it quite a bit. It should have been more memorable and it never fully utilized on its awesome premise, but still it remains a hugely entertaining, even emotional at times crime flick that is satisfactory and quite modern. Anyone looking for fun and quick silent flicks should definitely watch this one. It perfectly debunks the old, annoying myth that silent films are boring.

My favorite sequences are all of the romantic parts with the two leads and I loved the piano scenes. The secret passage and everything around it was so well conceived. And of course the ending is moving and tragic. The film is interesting for featuring Blizzard as an antagonistic character while also having all of the other characters be absolutely horrible as they show no empathy whatsoever to his condition. That led to such an incredibly dark emotionally and thematically film that it took me by surprise.

………………………………………………………

The Penalty Movie Review………………………………………………………

The Penalty features very good intertitles that are never overly abundant or sparse and they explain the plot and fuel the characterization very well. The acting is great, but so is the directing from Wallace Worsley. He isn’t Tod Browning, but he still did a very good job. This was the film that introduced the masses to the power of Lon Chaney and it did that remarkably well. I thought it was solidly paced, but some of the middle parts were much less interesting than the rest of the film. And it is well shot and with a very good eye for detail. Overall, I liked The Penalty a lot, but I didn’t love it as much as I wanted to.

The Penalty has its weaker parts and it isn’t as great overall as it could have been, but the premise is awesome and this crime flick features a crazy, incredibly dark thematically and emotionally storyline and filled with questionable actions by its characters. The reason to see it of course lies in the performance from Lon Chaney which is absolutely phenomenal. He had to physically torture himself while also portraying a very complex character and he still did a masterful job. This is certainly one great vehicle for one the best actors who ever lived.

The Freshman (1925)

The Freshman Movie Review……………………………………………………..

The Freshman Movie Review

The Freshman is a 1925 comedy film starring Harold Lloyd. It is a good, but archetypal and overly influential film.

……………………………………………………..

I’m just a regular fellow and I want you to step right up and call me Speedy!

……………………………………………………..

The Freshman Movie Review……………………………………………………..

I am talking about its plot. The freshman tries to become popular by joining the football team and eventually wins the respect from everyone. Needless to say, it is a very clichéd, exceedingly so premise and execution. I get that it was the first of its type, but its influence is mostly bad when it comes to college and especially sports movies and that is why I disliked its plot even more.

But it still has its great scenes and is a good film, just not as great as the critics say it is. The extended sewing sequence is absolutely fantastic and the prime comedic moment in the movie. Perfectly delivered and constructed, not to mention quite unforgettable. The first speech at college was also very good and the scene in which he realizes he is unpopular and they have been mocking him all along is actually quite touching.

Harold Lloyd is very good here. He gave a good, competent comedic performance and he even got some emotional moments as well. This is nowhere near the quality of his ‘Safety Last!’, but at least it comes close as he excelled in the nerdy roles which is best exemplified here. I also liked his girlfriend and especially the coach who was a memorable supporting character.

……………………………………………………..

The Freshman Movie Review……………………………………………………..

The Freshman is very well executed in action and although I wanted much more gags and action parts, those that we got are still excellent. The football part in the end is well executed, but I disliked it the most and that is what ruined this movie to an extent in my opinion. However, his first football practice is amazing and I just loved the scene in which he fools the angry dog and takes the ball close to him. Very good comedic stuff very well executed in terms of action.

So the film can be quite funny at times when it doesn’t rely on that stupid dance and clichéd sports stuff. Most of his gags worked and the film is surprisingly modern and hugely influential for better and for worse. It is a good influence when it comes to characterization which is very strong and humor which is mostly very satisfactory, but it is a bad influence when it comes to clichéd and entirely predictable storytelling.

……………………………………………………..

The Freshman Movie Review……………………………………………………..

I found the intertitles to be excellent in The Freshman which is a surprisingly well edited and paced flick, especially for its troubled time. The runtime is short and sweet, the film is well shot and memorable in imagery and it is consistently entertaining and a lot of fun from start to finish.

The Freshman is a highly influential college comedy flick for better and for worse. It is clichéd and entirely predictable in its plot with a very annoying ending, but the characterization is very good, Harold Lloyd is excellent in the main role, it has a couple of memorable scenes filled with funny gags and the film is so well made and a lot of fun that it transcends its obvious script problems.

My Rating – 4
