Pokémon (Advanced) Season 6 Review

The sixth season of Pokémon is titled Advanced and it is actually one of the weakest seasons so far which surprised me.

………………………………………………….

It’s Team Rocket!

Pokémon (Advanced) Season 6 Review

………………………………………………….

I was honestly very disappointed with Advanced. This season was supposed to be the new start of a fresh new era for the show with a new region, Pokémon and new characters but it ended up being a bore for the most part and ultimately pretty weak.

The problem with it is that it contains even more filler episodes than before with some episodes being entirely pointless and boring with no plot progression whatsoever and even the adventure element lacked in those episodes. Team Rocket also surprised me as they were also not all too amusing this time around.

Pikachu is okay as is Ash but they need better stories. Brock is back, but I honestly want Misty to return to the show and I am pretty sad that she went away as she was probably the most interesting character in the previous seasons.

As for those new characters, well they are a mixed bag but for the most part pretty mediocre. May is honestly very disappointing in comparison to Misty as she has no knowledge of the Pokémon whatsoever and is overall too weak and uninterested in all this. As for Max as her brother, he is that bratty, annoying and overly talkative kid whom you just want to slap.

Torchic is the cutest of the new Pokemon quite probably, but I also really like Treecko and I found his story probably the best of all the creature stories so far. I want more Mudkip in the show and they should be more present. Seviper was an obvious new addition to Jessie’s roster to replace Arbok. Overall, I liked the new Pokémon from the Hoenn region quite a bit and I like that the old ones are mostly absent here. I just want better stories for all of them.

This season ended up being a bore with some very good episodes, but too many filler episodes and the new characters are actually more annoying instead of likable. This show desperately needs more fights in it and I hope the next seasons bring them.

Worst Episodes: Three’s a Crowd, A Corphish Out of Water, Just One of the Geysers and Abandon Ship!

Best Episodes: A Tail with a Twist, All in Day’s Wurmple and A Three Team Scheme.

The fifth season of Pokemon is Master Quest and it is pretty much on par with the previous season.

Pokémon (Master Quest) Season 5 Review

They are of the similar quality but I prefer this one as it at least got some things moving. I will later talk about the positives, but let’s first go through the negatives and there are quite a lot once again.

As was the case before, a lot of these episodes are filler material. The last episode I disliked and only Pikachu getting sick was a solid cliffhanger but the entire episode was otherwise not like a finale and the previous one was so much better in that regard.

The Pidgey episode is one giant, boring filler about the dullest creature there is. The one about Bulbasaur is beyond childish and silly. Lapras appeared again and that was totally unnecessary. So there are a lot of these boring, one-off episodes which serve no purpose at all but to just extend the runtime of the season. There was very little plot progression before the tournament itself.

But the tournament was reliably great. I loved all of its fights and of course Ash vs. Gary was the most memorable one albeit I do not think that he ought to have won. But he lost the next match and it was a memorable moment for sure. I really like the action and fights on this show and it’s a shame that they don’t utilize them more.

Phanpy got introduced to the team, but more importantly Larvitar and I really liked his problem with shyness. Unown was also very memorable and that episode was visually and tonally quite authentic. Those are the highlights when it comes to the Pokemon.

Pokémon (Master Quest) Season 5 Review

………………………………………………….

As for the humans, Ash definitely makes progress throughout every season and once again I loved Team Rocket. But the highlight was the penultimate episode which was honestly surprisingly moving in its emotional resonance and power. I got used to this team and seeing Misty and Brock leave was definitely quite sad.

So in the end it was a weaker, season which still had many terrific episodes despite a lot of annoying filler. I loved the tournament and the penultimate episode is very moving. Although I am sad to see the two of them go, I am more than happy to see the new creatures from Gen III/Hoenn Region appear and they are most definitely going to bring new life to the series that desperately needs it.

Worst Episodes: Fly Me to the Moon, The Mystery is History, Lapras of Luxury, You’re a Star, Larvitar, Some Like It Hot! and Great Bowls of Fire.

Best Episodes: Hatching a Plan, Can’t Beat the Heat, Playing with Fire, Johto Photo Finish and Gotta Catch Ya Later!

Pokémon (Johto League Champions) Season 4 (2000)

Pokémon (Johto League Champions) Season 4 Review

The fourth season of Pokémon is Johto League Champions. It is the worst season so far.

………………………………………………….

We’re blasting off again!

………………………………………………….

Pokémon (Johto League Champions) Season 4 Review

………………………………………………….

I really had a problem with this season as it was basically one giant detour and unabashed one at that. We still did not get the Johto League here as the next season will finally cover that. What we got are some of the most boring episodes so far in the series.

Brock definitely is quite funny in this season and I really liked some of his romantic escapades which were even funnier than before. Misty is as great as usual but Ash is more of the same and he doesn’t really progress too much so far.

Jessie, James and Meowth are somewhat less utilized this time around which is of course a huge mistake as I absolutely love Team Rocket. Now they got some fun episodes for sure, but mostly nothing too interesting. Though their motto got two hilarious renditions here: one while eating apples and one while underwater. Their rumbling was so funny there.

Two episodes in this season absolutely shine and both are five-star material which is rare and thus fully appreciated. One is the episode in which Jessie can suddenly control Pokémon, that was awesome and the closest Team Rocket got to a victory. And the other one is the Articuno quest which was so mysterious and such a wonderful adventure episode at the height of its powers.

………………………………………………….

Pokémon (Johto League Champions) Season 4 Review

………………………………………………….

But for every one of those episodes, we get a pointless Pidgey episode or an entirely unnecessary character or some boring “adventure” that is basically detour and is either childish or downright insufferable how tedious it is.

And as for the Pokémon, nothing really of importance happens here. Yes, finally Chikorita evolves into Bayleef and thus Ash finally gets a new second evolution Pokémon. That was great but long overdue. But I think none of their other Pokémon evolved and they really need to start doing that quickly as it is getting ridiculous by now.

So in the end, Johto League Champions has its pretty stellar and great episodes, but most are just basic detour and in some instance even filler material. Rarely anything of true importance happens here and having in mind that it has 52 episodes, that is a giant waste of time when you think about it.

Worst Episodes: Carrying On, Right On, Rhydon and Machoke, Machoke Man!

Best Episodes: A Dairy Tale Ending, Freeze Frame and Control Freak!

The third season of Pokémon is The Johto Journeys and it is a pretty solid season with a couple of terrific episodes.

Pokémon (The Johto Journeys) Season 3 Review

………………………………………………….

So basically this season comes in the middle so far. It is inferior to the first one because it doesn’t have a league in it at all as that is left for the next season, but it is definitely an improvement over its predecessor thanks to more quality episodes and less boring ones.

Let’s talk about some of the highlights. I loved that episode with Snubble. It is a wonderful examination of how some pet owners are overly protective and how they spoil and ruin their pets’ lives. A very good message episode.

Jessie’s episode is the very best one here as it gives us a glimpse into her relationship with one Blissey and her dreams of becoming a nurse. It is rare seeing her be nice and gentle and this was a great episode as it showcased that side of her, but still she remains the cold villain which I love. And of course I’ll take any episode with Team Rocket that I can get and they stole the show once again in this season.

The bug battle was awesome and I have to say that the fights definitely became somewhat better and more detailed and interesting this time around. Team Rocket got a Woobuffet which was an interesting, funny development as well.

The Totodile Duel is another highlight as it features for once Misty fighting and she fought Ash really well in such an interesting match. And of course I laughed quite a lot during The Fortune Hunters as the gay jokes surrounding James were so amusing.

Pokémon (The Johto Journeys) Season 3 Review

………………………………………………….

The animation continues to be a problem with this show and I am looking forward to better animated seasons in the future. Definitely some episodes here are entirely pointless and either boring or serving as detours. I thought that the various characters they met along the way were almost certain to be very bland and that still remains the biggest problem of this show – it is way too episodic in nature. However, it is getting better and here the improvements are evident.

The Johto Journeys definitely has its fair share of entirely dull or useless episodes and adventures, but it also has its really good or great episodes with most of the characters getting their proper due.

Worst Episodes: The Whistle Stop, Foul Weather Friends and The Superhero Secret.

Best Episodes: Ignorance is Blissey, Snubble Snobbery, Gettin’ the Bugs Out and The Totodile Duel.

Pokémon (Adventures on the Orange Islands) Season 2 Review

The second season of Pokémon is called Adventures on the Orange Islands and it first aired in 1999. It is an inferior season.

Prepare for trouble!

………………………………………………….

Pokémon (Adventures on Orange Islands) Season 2 Review

………………………………………………….

Yes, the previous season was much better in my opinion as this one has just the various adventures and no leagues whatsoever. We only follow Misty and Ash here as Brock leaves them and that was great as Brock is uninteresting to me if you discount his pathetic pursuing of girls.

However, Tracey as the new addition is even worse as he is such a bland, boring and entirely forgettable character and thankfully he is not going to appear in the next season as he stayed with Professor Oak who is here as likable as always. I also really liked that episode with Gary as it was nice seeing that he became more mature.

Ash got Lapras here and it is one of his biggest new additions to the team and he also got a new Pokedex which is also interesting. I liked seeing Charizard become more helpful and obedient to Ash and he is one of the more interesting of his Pokémon.

To me the highlight here was the episode in which Poliwag helped Misty get a cure for Ash and Tracey while Meowth and James are looking for the same cure for Jessie. I absolutely loved this episode as it was a glorious emphasis on Misty and Team Rocket. She is great here and I loved the entire adventure and cartoony action here, but it was also great seeing the two try to help Jessie. It is a sweet and wonderful episode and I wish the rest were like this one.

Pokémon (Adventures on Orange Islands) Season 2 Review

………………………………………………….

There are some wonderful episodes to be had here, but unfortunately there are also way too many detours and once again the series relies too much on cutesy factor as well as childish adventure with not enough true battles and no league elements here. So in the end, this season is solid, but inferior to the first one as it is not all that eventful.

Worst Episodes: In the Pink, Stage Fight, The Joy of Pokémon and the Underground Round-Up.

Best Episodes: Shell Shock, The Stun Spore Detour and The Rivalry Revival.

Pokémon (Indigo League) Season 1 Review

The first season of Pokémon is called Indigo League and it is the very first season from this anime which premiered in 1997. It has eighty episodes and it follows Ash and his friends on their way to the titular league.

………………………………………………….

Prepare for trouble, and make it double.

To protect the world from devastation,

To unite all people within our nation,

To denounce the evil of truth and love,

To extend our reach to the stars above.

JESSE! JAMES!

Team Rocket blasts off at the speed of light,

Surrender now or prepare to fight.

Meowth, that’s right!

Pokémon (Indigo League) Season 1 Review

Because this is the very first story, I will first talk about each and every character and afterwards I am going to comment upon the overall story and some highlights. So here we go. First off, Ash Ketchum. Now I like Ash quite a bit despite being a somewhat familiar anime protagonist who is overly competent, heroic and stubborn. But he is not too strong or clever at first and I loved that he actually lost fairly early in the league but I will talk about that later.

His relationship with Pikachu is of course strong and the two truly are friends as he relies on his yellow buddy a bit too much in the duels. Even though I liked them and their relationship and of course Pikachu is so cute, I definitely found some of their moments to be overly sentimental.

Misty is one of the character highlights. Surely she is written off as a stereotypical girl at times as she likes to talk and complain a lot, but she is also a competent duelist and at least she got some good action scenes and fights. And her obsession with water type Pokémon is interesting. Her relationship with Ash is the best and I loved their constant fighting and bickering.

Pokémon (Indigo League) Season 1 Review

Brock is the weakest of the three. Surely his sexual escapades are pretty amusing, but other than that, he is overly good, bland and just a boring character overall. Gary Oak is also way too familiar and annoying but the Professor is quite likable and endearing.

But of course the very best characters are Team Rocket. I absolutely love this crazy trio! They are such a fun, incredibly funny and frequently hilarious group of villains and your classic goofy and incompetent anime villains and those I like the most. Meowth is a lot of fun and I love his accent, but Jessie and James are surely fantastic and I love their dynamic and their catchy lines.

Their motto is the best – so funny, always very catchy and dynamic and they steal the show every single time. I am literally waiting for their motto to arrive in every single episode. That is how incredibly fun and funny it is. I loved the spicing of it constantly and their wardrobe changes are always unforgettable.

Pokémon (Indigo League) Season 1 Review

………………………………………………….

Let’s talk about the various Pokémon that are introduced here. My main issue with this first season is that Ash and the company just experience adventures with the creatures and either help them or rescue them. He rarely ever actually catches them which is super frustrating and I want more of that in the future.

Bulbasaur is pretty boring and rarely ever did anything useful here, but Charmander is great and cute and I loved how the evolved Charizard never obeyed Ash in this season. That was quite amusing every time. Squirtle is fun but I did not like that he had glasses on. The various insects are weak and disposable as usual, but they actually got solid episodes.

………………………………………………….

Pokémon (Indigo League) Season 1 Review

………………………………………………….

The birds are boring, but the ghosts are great. To me the highlights are Psyduck and Jigglypuff. The first one is absolutely hilarious as Misty’s stupid companion who can be very powerful, but is mostly causing trouble and acting stupid. And of course the singing devil is so incredibly funny and the highlight was seeing him get angry for everybody falling asleep and then painting their faces angrily. So funny.

The overall storyline here is fine, but not great. I loved how it began and I loved how it ended, but the middle parts tended to drag and although most adventures were either fun or very interesting and well executed, some were downright detours and either childish or unnecessary. But Ash losing was the highlight and it was so realistic to witness that as he did not really capture enough Pokémon for the league. That episode was so unexpected and the standout one for me. As for the others, well every episode which had Team Rocket abundantly used was the highlight for me.

Pokémon (Indigo League) Season 1 Review

………………………………………………….

The animation is pretty weak. I loved the score and the opening song and various pieces of music used throughout. I watched English dub and it is actually not only decent, but pretty good and competent overall and one of the best dubs out there. But there is no denying that the animation looks ridiculously cheap and unpolished for 1997‘s standards.

Overall, Indigo League is solid as Pokemon’s first season. It sometimes drags and I wanted more capturing and dueling in it, but most adventures were memorable and well told, the characters are good with Team Rocket being simply fantastic and I loved the league episodes and that they took some unexpected chances with it. It is definitely a good introductory season for this famous anime.

Worst Episodes:  Here Comes the Squirtle Squad, The Kangashkan Kid, The Case of the K-9 Caper!, It’s Mr. Mime Time and To Master the Oniexpected!

Best Episodes: Pokémon Shipwreck, Sparks Fly for Magnemite, Ditto’s Mysterious Mansion, Friend and Foe Alike, Pokémon, I Choose You!, The Problem with Paras and Attack of the Prehistoric Pokémon.
